Chapter 1 - “He’s Not My Son”Toby trusted Russell completely.

That was what made the moment so unbearable.

The two-year-old stood in the enormous foyer of Victor’s mansion, laughing as Russell lifted him into the air.

“Dad!”

Toby squealed and reached both hands toward him.

For half a second, Russell smiled.

Then his face changed.

The warmth disappeared.

His eyes went flat.

And without warning, he turned and dropped Toby into the large trash bin beside the console table.

The little boy landed among crumpled paper, household trash, and soft food scraps.

Toby screamed.

The laughter vanished so suddenly that the sound seemed to tear the room in half.

He began sobbing.

Russell looked down at him.

“You’re such a nuisance.”

“Elena!”

The voice did not come from Russell.

Elena had just entered from the hallway.

She stopped.

Her grocery bag slipped from her hand.

“Toby!”

She ran.

Toby saw his mother and reached frantically toward her.

“Mommy!”

Elena pulled him from the bin.

His tiny arms locked around her neck.

He buried his face against her shoulder, crying so hard his breathing came in broken little gasps.

Elena turned on Russell.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Russell showed no shame.

No panic.

No apology.

“He’s two years old!”

“He’s not my son.”

Elena stared at him.

“But he’s mine.”

Russell’s jaw tightened.

Before Elena could say another word—

THUD.

The sound of a cane striking polished stone silenced the foyer.

Elena turned.

Victor stood at the bottom of the grand staircase.

Her father was sixty-eight, silver-haired, impeccably dressed, and still carried the same quiet authority that had made executives twice his size lower their voices around him.

His eyes moved from Toby’s tear-covered face to Russell.

Then to Elena.

“Russell is right about one thing.”

Elena could barely believe what she was hearing.

“Dad?”

Victor’s stare remained cold.

“That boy doesn’t have this family’s blood.”

Elena froze.

For a moment even Toby’s crying seemed distant.

“What did you just say?”

Victor did not answer.

Russell stood several feet behind her, silent.

Elena pulled Toby tighter against her chest.

“He is my son.”

Victor’s hand tightened around his cane.

“And you are my daughter.”

“Then he has your blood!”

Victor’s jaw moved.

He had no biological answer because there was none.

Toby was Elena’s biological child.

Victor knew it.

So did Russell.

Which meant Victor’s sentence had not been about biology.

It had meant something else.

Something uglier.

Victor turned away.

“Take Toby upstairs.”

Elena stared at him.

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You don’t get to order me around after standing there and defending what he just did.”

Russell finally spoke.

“You’re making this bigger than it was.”

Elena spun toward him.

“You threw my child into garbage.”

“He wasn’t hurt.”

Toby flinched at Russell’s voice.

Elena felt it.

That tiny reaction changed something inside her.

She looked down at her son.

His fingers were clutching her blouse.

His face was wet.

And when Russell shifted one step closer—

Toby buried his face deeper against Elena.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not merely shock.

Recognition.

Elena became still.

“How long?”

Russell frowned.

“What?”

“How long has he been afraid of you?”

“He isn’t.”

Toby whimpered.

Russell looked at him.

Elena saw the expression.

Cold impatience.

Exactly the expression Toby had reacted to.

She stepped backward.

Victor struck his cane lightly against the floor.

“Elena, enough.”

She stared at her father.

“You saw him.”

“I saw an inappropriate reaction.”

“An inappropriate reaction?”

“Russell lost his temper.”

“He threw a toddler into a trash bin.”

“And Toby is physically fine.”

Elena could not believe the words.

Then Victor said something stranger.

“Do not destroy your marriage over a moment you don’t understand.”

Elena’s anger suddenly cooled.

She studied him.

Victor was not emotional.

He was afraid.

Very slightly.

But Elena knew her father.

She had seen that tension in his jaw before board meetings, audits, acquisitions.

“This isn’t about Toby,” she whispered.

Victor’s eyes changed.

Russell looked toward him.

There.

A glance between the two men.

Brief.

But undeniable.

Elena saw it.

“What is going on?”

Neither answered.

She backed toward the front entrance.

Russell stepped forward.

“Elena.”

“Stay away from us.”

“You’re my wife.”

“And he is my son.”

She carried Toby outside.

Behind her, Victor called:

“Elena, if you walk out that door right now, you need to understand what you’re risking.”

She stopped.

Toby trembled against her.

Elena slowly turned.

“What am I risking?”

Victor stared at her.

Then toward Russell.

His next sentence made no sense.

Not yet.

“More than you know.”

Elena walked out anyway.

May you like

And for the first time in her life, she left her father’s mansion wondering whether the two men inside were protecting the family—

or protecting themselves from her son.
