Chapter 5 - The Woman Ethan Thought He Married

Claudia called Ethan at 9:17 that morning.

The temporary protective order prevented her from contacting Oliver.

It did not yet prohibit contact with Ethan.

He almost ignored the call.

Henry watched the screen flashing on the kitchen island.

“Answer it.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I want to hear what she says.”

Detective Brooks had warned Ethan not to interrogate Claudia on behalf of police.

But he was permitted to speak to his wife.

He answered.

“Ethan?”

Claudia sounded as though she had been crying.

For one dangerous second, Ethan's instincts returned.

Comfort her.

Protect her.

Fix things.

Then he looked through the glass doors and saw Oliver sitting beside Nora.

“What did you do?”

Claudia inhaled.

“Thank God you're home.”

“What did you do to my son?”

“Nothing.”

“He was restrained in the trunk.”

“He became violent.”

“Stop saying that.”

“Because Henry frightened him.”

“My father didn't put him in the car.”

“He has been turning Oliver against me for months.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

There it was.

The Claudia he knew.

Not shouting.

Not panicking.

Reframing.

Always calmly reframing.

“Why were you taking him to Arizona?”

Silence.

Only three seconds.

But enough.

“Who told you that?”

Ethan looked at Henry.

“You did.”

“I can explain.”

“Then explain.”

“Oliver needs treatment.”

“His therapist says he doesn't.”

“Rebecca Sloan doesn't see him at home.”

“And the forged signature?”

Another silence.

“I didn't forge anything.”

“My name is on an authorization I never signed.”

“Your assistant prepared documents.”

“No.”

“Ethan, you're exhausted.”

“Don't.”

“Your father is manipulating this.”

Henry's jaw tightened.

Claudia continued.

“He hates me. He always has.”

“This isn't about Dad.”

“It has always been about your father.”

Ethan glanced toward Henry.

Something in Claudia's wording caught him.

“What does that mean?”

She hesitated.

“He controls everything.”

“The company?”

“The company. The trust. You.”

Ethan's grip tightened around the phone.

“And you wanted him removed as trustee.”

“I wanted safeguards.”

“Victor Hale gave me an incapacity petition.”

“Victor is trying to protect the transaction.”

“You knew about it.”

“Of course I knew.”

Henry's eyebrows lifted.

Claudia realized too late.

Ethan asked quietly, “Why?”

“Because we're married.”

“No. Why were you discussing my father's capacity with Victor?”

“Because you refuse to confront your father.”

Ethan felt anger rise.

“For God's sake, Claudia, Oliver was in a trunk.”

“He was never in danger.”

“You tied his wrists.”

“He was kicking.”

“You covered his mouth.”

“So he would calm down.”

Henry stepped away, disgusted.

Ethan's voice shook.

“Did you send emails from my account?”

Claudia said nothing.

“Did you?”

“You gave me access.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“Then maybe you should ask yourself why your father and the police are feeding you questions.”

Ethan laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“You're blaming everyone except yourself.”

“I'm trying to save our family.”

“From what?”

“From Henry.”

Henry stopped walking.

Claudia continued.

“He will leave you with nothing.”

Ethan stared toward his father.

“What are you talking about?”

“He changed the succession plan.”

Henry's face changed.

Ethan noticed.

“What succession plan?”

Claudia went quiet.

Henry looked away.

Ethan lowered the phone.

“Dad?”

Henry said nothing.

“Did you change something?”

Claudia heard.

“Ask him,” she said.

Ethan raised the phone again.

“What did he change?”

“Ask your father why Oliver now receives control of Sarah's voting interest at twenty-one instead of thirty.”

Henry shut his eyes.

Ethan stared.

“Is that true?”

Henry answered reluctantly.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it wasn't your decision.”

Claudia spoke softly through the phone.

“See?”

Ethan's anger moved in two directions now.

That was what Claudia wanted.

“Don't hang up,” he said.

Henry frowned.

Ethan returned to the call.

“How did you know?”

No answer.

“How did you know what was in Sarah's amended trust documents?”

Claudia's breathing changed.

“You told me.”

“No.”

“Yes, you did.”

“I didn't know.”

Silence.

Henry stepped closer.

Only trustees, the trust company's counsel, Henry's lawyer, and one other person had possessed copies.

Sarah.

Before she died.

Ethan's voice became very quiet.

“Claudia, how did you get Sarah's trust amendment?”

The call ended.

Henry and Ethan stared at each other.

For the first time since Ethan returned home, their anger disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

Because Claudia had just revealed she knew information Ethan himself had never known.

And whatever she had been planning—

it had begun at least two years earlier.
