Chapter 21 - THE CONSEQUENCES

The financial review concluded two months later.

Approximately thirty-one thousand dollars had been improperly or ambiguously taken from Helena’s accounts for household expenses beyond her agreed contribution.

Some charges were genuinely shared.

Some were not.

Sixteen thousand had been routed back to Corinne through Brooke.

That amount was returned.

Additional money was repaid through a settlement supervised by counsel.

The matter was also reported to appropriate elder-protection and financial authorities for review.

No dramatic arrest occurred.

No police dragged Corinne from a mansion.

Reality was slower.

Interviews.

Documents.

Account freezes.

Attorney letters.

Bank reviews.

Civil exposure.

Possible criminal implications depending on intent and evidence.

Helena preferred it that way.

She did not want spectacle.

She wanted boundaries that could not be argued away.

Corinne lost access to every financial system connected to Helena.

The power-of-attorney draft was destroyed.

The signed authorization formally revoked.

Helena’s estate plan remained unchanged.

That surprised Graham.

“You’re not changing my inheritance?”

“Why would I?”

He stared.

“Because I failed you.”

Helena smiled sadly.

“I’m not using inheritance to grade your behavior.”

“But—”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I spent enough months around someone who used money to control relationships.”

That ended the discussion.

Graham understood.

Justice did not need to become another instrument of power.
