Chapter 15 - Rex’s Collar Had Been Recording More Than His LocationThey regrouped at Daniel's office after dark.

Mason refused to remain near the mansion.
Helen refused to return there.
For the first time in decades, Grant Whitmore's immediate family had effectively abandoned him.
Yet Ethan couldn't decide whether Grant was the center of the conspiracy or merely one of its oldest prisoners.
Nolan frightened everyone.
Including Grant.
That distinction mattered.
Rex slept near Ethan's chair.
Daniel studied the files.
"We have enough to involve federal authorities."
Mason shook his head.
"Not yet."
Daniel stared.
"You're legally dead."
"I noticed."
"You have evidence of attempted murder, financial crimes, witness intimidation and possibly homicide."
"And Nolan still has people everywhere."
"That's why law enforcement exists."
Mason laughed bitterly.
"Nolan was law enforcement."
Daniel leaned back.
Ethan looked at Rex.
The electronic collar module caught his attention again.
He removed it carefully.
A small charging port.
Memory slot.
Lauren watched.
"What are you doing?"
"This isn't just GPS."
"How do you know?"
"I've used surveillance collars before."
Mason crouched.
"Audio?"
"Maybe."
Ethan connected it to Daniel's spare computer.
A directory appeared.
Audio files.
Hundreds.
Lauren stared.
"Nolan has been recording the house through Rex?"
"Looks like it."
Files were automatically timestamped whenever the collar detected sustained voices.
Nolan had turned a dog into a mobile listening device.
Ethan scrolled to the night before.
The recording began with garden noise.
Then Ethan's whisper:
"Rex… you still remember me?"
Lauren looked at him.
He ignored her.
The audio captured Ethan saying he'd raised Rex.
Captured the powder hitting the water.
Then Kane barking.
Later, inside the mansion, Rex had walked near Grant and Nolan.
Their conversation was recorded.
Grant: "You told me Cole wouldn't come back."
Nolan: "Someone brought him back."
Grant: "Lauren?"
Nolan: "Maybe."
Grant: "If he finds the chamber—"
Nolan: "Then he finds Caleb's things."
Grant: "You said you removed everything."
Pause.
Nolan: "I removed what mattered."
Grant: "Like you removed Caleb?"
Silence filled Daniel's office.
Then Nolan's recorded voice became dangerously quiet.
"You want to be careful."
Grant answered, "I'm done being careful."
Lauren covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Grant: "Twenty-six years I've paid you."
Nolan: "Twenty-six years I've protected you."
Grant: "You protected yourself."
Nolan: "Same difference."
Grant: "What did you do with Caleb?"
Long pause.
Nolan: "What you asked."
Grant: "I asked you to get him out of the state."
Ethan froze.
Not kill him.
Grant expected Caleb to be sent away.
Nolan replied, "And he left the state."
Grant: "Alive?"
Silence.
Then Nolan laughed softly.
The audio ended.
Everyone stared at the screen.
Mason whispered, "Dad didn't know."
Ethan looked at him.
"He still covered everything up."
"I'm not defending him."
"Good."
"But if he believed Nolan simply forced Caleb to disappear—"
"Grant still let the world think my brother was dead."
"Yes."
"Grant still framed me."
"Yes."
No absolution.
Only different degrees of guilt.
They searched more collar files.
One from six months earlier captured Mason confronting Nolan.
Mason: "Wexler gave me everything."
Nolan: "Then Wexler made a mistake."
Mason: "If anything happens to me—"
Nolan: "Something already happened to you. You were born into the wrong family."
Another file from three months ago contained Lauren's voice talking to her mother.
Nolan had recorded their private conversations without either knowing.
Then Ethan found a file dated eight months ago.
The night Mason's car went off the bridge.
Rex had been near Nolan beforehand.
Nolan spoke on the phone.
"We do it at mile marker seventeen."
Pause.
"No. Make sure there's a body."
Lauren turned away.
Mason stared at the floor.
Daniel whispered, "That's enough."
But Ethan kept searching.
A file from three years ago.
The night Caleb died.
Timestamp 1:32 a.m.
Rex's collar then had been older, but apparently Nolan had tested an earlier version.
Audio played.
Caleb groaning.
Mason shouting.
Grant swearing.
Nolan giving instructions.
Then:
Caleb: "Ethan's going to find out."
Nolan: "Ethan's in Chicago."
Caleb: "He'll find out."
Nolan: "Not if everyone tells him the same story."
A garage door opened.
Rex barked.
Nolan used Ethan's old command.
"Rex. Inside."
The dog resisted.
Again:
"Inside."
A door slammed.
Rex was locked away.
Ethan closed his eyes.
The anonymous sender had been right.
Nolan did it.
The recording continued.
Mason: "Where are you taking him?"
Nolan: "Somewhere Grant doesn't have to look at him."
Grant: "Keep him alive."
Ethan opened his eyes.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
Grant ordered Nolan to keep Caleb alive.
Nolan answered:
"Of course."
Then, more softly, almost impossible to hear:
"For now."
Everyone went silent.
Rex lifted his head.
Then the office lights went out.
Lauren gasped.
Daniel stood.
"Power failure?"
Ethan looked through the blinds.
The entire block still had electricity.
Only Daniel's office was dark.
Rex rose and growled toward the hallway.
Mason whispered, "Nolan."
A red laser dot appeared on the wall.
Moved slowly.
Then stopped on Ethan's chest.
May you like
Lauren screamed.
Ethan dropped to the floor as the window shattered.
