Chapter 6 - HANNAH’S APOLOGYHannah asked to see Patricia.

Owen objected.

“Not alone.”

“I won’t be alone.”

Megan came.

Neutral coffee room at a mediation center.

No family home.

No children.

Patricia arrived ten minutes late.

She wore dark glasses though indoors.

When she removed them, her cheek showed almost no mark.

Hannah began first.

“I slapped you.”

Patricia folded arms.

“Yes.”

“I was wrong to use physical violence.”

Patricia’s expression softened with satisfaction.

“I’m sorry.”

“Good.”

Hannah continued:

“But I am not apologizing for confronting how you treated Lucy.”

Patricia’s face hardened again.

“There it is.”

“You always have justification.”

“No.”

“I have two separate facts.”

“I was wrong to slap you.”

“You were wrong to humiliate my daughter.”

Patricia laughed.

“Humiliate?”

“You threw food from her hand to dog.”

“She was eating too much.”

“Did pediatrician tell you that?”

“No.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

“Did Owen?”

“No.”

“Then you made it up.”

Patricia looked toward Megan.

“This is family matter.”

Megan smiled.

“I’m Hannah’s family.”

Patricia ignored.

Hannah continued.

“You also told Lucy Lauren’s boys are real grandchildren.”

Patricia denied immediately.

“She misunderstood.”

“There is video of you saying blue plates are for Calloways.”

“That is not same.”

“Why not?”

Patricia’s mouth tightened.

Hannah placed printed adoption emails on table.

“You interfered with adoption.”

Patricia did not touch papers.

“I protected Owen.”

“You impersonated me.”

“I never sent that email.”

Hannah paused.

Interesting.

Patricia admitted contacting attorney but denied fake email.

“Then who did?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you create address?”

“No.”

“Can you prove?”

“No.”

“Can you explain how it reached Rebecca through you?”

Patricia looked away.

“I received it.”

“From?”

“Someone.”

Hannah stared.

“Who?”

Patricia refused.

This was new.

Maybe she had an accomplice.

Megan noticed too.

Patricia said:

“You’re trying to turn my son against me.”

Hannah remained calm.

“No.”

“Your actions are doing that.”

Patricia’s hands tightened.

“You think you won because camera caught one bad moment.”

“There is no winning.”

“There is Lucy.”

“That’s all.”

Patricia laughed.

“Exactly.”

“You always use her.”

Hannah’s face changed.

“How?”

“To control Owen.”

“You made him father before he was ready.”

Hannah’s voice became very quiet.

“Owen changed diapers.”

“He took night shifts when Lucy had pneumonia.”

“He taught her to swim.”

“He asked me to marry him.”

“No one made him anything.”

Patricia leaned forward.

“You know why he feels obligated.”

Hannah stared.

“Because Michael died.”

“You played widow.”

Megan stood.

Hannah raised hand.

“Sit.”

Megan obeyed reluctantly.

Patricia had wanted reaction.

Again.

Hannah saw it.

She breathed.

“You cannot provoke me again.”

Patricia smiled thinly.

“So now everything is provocation.”

“No.”

“Only things you do deliberately.”

That smile vanished.

Then Hannah asked:

“Why did you tell Lauren trust was blood-only?”

Patricia froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because Lauren told us.”

For first time, Patricia looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Cornered.

She recovered.

“Your father-in-law built that money for his family.”

“He considered Lucy family.”

“Charles has his memorandum.”

Patricia’s face lost color.

Hannah saw.

“Did you know Harold said he never wanted Lucy treated as half family?”

Patricia looked down.

Yes.

She knew.

Megan whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Patricia’s voice became bitter.

“Harold was sentimental at end.”

Hannah stared.

“He was dying.”

“Exactly.”

“People say things.”

“You ignored his actual trust language too.”

Patricia’s jaw tightened.

Then:

“You have no idea what I gave that family.”

“There it is.”

Hannah sat back.

“This isn’t about Lucy’s behavior.”

“It’s about you believing you own Calloway name.”

Patricia stood.

“I’m done.”

Hannah did not stop her.

At door Patricia turned.

“One day Owen will understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That loving a child is not same as making her your responsibility forever.”

Hannah answered:

“That is exactly what parenting is.”

Patricia left.

Megan exhaled.

“She’s terrifying.”

Hannah looked at papers.

“She lied about email.”

“Maybe.”

Megan frowned.

“You think she didn’t create it?”

“I think if she did, why deny that one thing after admitting she interfered?”

Good point.

Hannah called Owen.

“We may have another person involved.”

Owen went silent.

“Who?”

“No idea.”

Then Rebecca forwarded metadata from fake account.

Recovery email partially masked.

First letters:

lau*@gmail.com**

Owen stared when Hannah sent screenshot.

Lauren?

His sister.

Could be coincidence.

Could be not.

He called her immediately.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Then text:

I need to tell you something in person.

Owen closed his eyes.

May you like

The conspiracy to keep Lucy out of family had not been Patricia alone.

And the next betrayal might come from someone he never expected to be involved.
