Chapter 1 - THE SECOND AFTER SHE LEFTEmma had been crying for almost twenty minutes.

At fifteen months old, she had no words for the pain in her gums. She only knew that something hurt, she was tired, and the woman holding her was becoming angrier every time she cried.

Margaret Bennett bounced her granddaughter once.

Then harder.

“Enough.”

Emma cried louder.

Laura was standing near the dining-room doorway when she heard the change in Margaret’s voice.

She turned.

Ryan remained on the sofa, staring at his phone.

“Ryan, take her from your mother.”

He barely looked up.

“She’s fine.”

Emma twisted in Margaret’s arms.

Her small face was wet with tears.

Margaret’s expression tightened.

“All you ever do is cry!”

Then, before Laura could cross the room, Margaret struck Emma once across the cheek with an open hand.

The sound was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Laura froze.

A faint red mark appeared on Emma’s cheek.

The baby screamed.

Margaret glared at her.

“You’re just like your mother.”

Something inside Laura broke.

“Give me my baby!”

She rushed forward.

Ryan stood.

For one second Laura thought he was finally going to help.

Instead, he stepped between her and Margaret.

His hand lightly blocked Laura’s arm.

“Let Mom discipline her.”

Laura stared at him.

She could not understand the sentence.

“Discipline?”

“She’s been screaming all afternoon.”

“She’s fifteen months old.”

“My mother raised two children.”

“Your mother just hit mine.”

“Ours,” Ryan snapped.

Laura looked at him.

Then at Margaret.

Emma kept crying behind his shoulder.

Laura pushed Ryan’s arm aside.

He tried to block her again.

She slapped him once.

The room went silent except for Emma.

Ryan touched his cheek in disbelief.

Laura stared directly into his eyes.

“Coward.”

She stepped around him.

Margaret resisted for only half a second before Laura took Emma from her arms.

Laura held her daughter against her chest.

“It’s okay.”

Emma buried her face into Laura’s cream sweater.

Laura reached for her handbag.

Ryan seemed to realize she was actually leaving.

“Laura, where are you going?”

She turned.

There had been a time when anger would have filled her answer.

Now there was almost nothing left.

“I’ll find someone…”

She paused.

“…who can actually give us something to rely on.”

“Laura.”

She walked toward the door.

“Don’t do this.”

Laura opened it.

Ryan took one step after her.

Margaret stopped him.

“Let her go.”

Laura heard it.

She looked back once.

Ryan did not follow.

That hurt more than everything else.

She walked outside with Emma still crying against her shoulder.

The front door closed.

Inside, silence returned.

Ryan stared at it.

His cheek was still warm from Laura’s slap.

“She actually hit me.”

Margaret did not answer.

Ryan turned.

His mother no longer looked angry.

The irritation was gone.

So was the shock.

Instead, Margaret was watching him with a strange calmness.

Calculating.

Ryan stared back.

“What?”

Margaret slowly reached for her smartphone on the coffee table.

“Nothing.”

A faint smile appeared.

Ryan’s expression changed.

“Mom.”

“She left.”

“So?”

Margaret unlocked her phone.

“With the baby.”

Ryan looked toward the door.

Then back at her.

Understanding entered his face.

“You think this helps?”

Margaret’s smile widened slightly.

“She struck you and left the marital home with your child.”

Ryan swallowed.

For months, the idea had existed only in conversations neither of them wanted written down.

The refinancing.

The debt.

The house.

The custody leverage their attorney said could become valuable if Laura ever “became unstable.”

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“She hit me because you slapped Emma.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“And who saw that?”

Ryan said nothing.

Margaret lifted the phone.

“You need to stop thinking like her husband.”

She selected a contact.

“You need to start thinking like Emma’s father.”

Ryan looked toward the window.

Laura’s car was disappearing at the end of the street.

He should have run after her.

He should have apologized.

He should have demanded his mother leave.

Instead he slowly nodded.

Margaret pressed call.

A man answered.

“Graham?”

Margaret’s voice instantly became soft and frightened.

“It happened.”

Ryan looked at her.

“She became violent.”

A pause.

“Yes. Ryan is here.”

Another pause.

Margaret looked directly at her son.

“And Laura took the baby.”

Ryan’s stomach tightened.

Margaret listened.

Then said:

“File whatever you need to file.”

The smile returned.

May you like

“Tonight.”

And for the first time, Ryan understood that his mother had been waiting for Laura to walk through that door.
