Chapter 13 - THE TABLET COMES BACK

The tablet was found in the least dramatic place possible.
Laundry storage.
Behind a stack of old winter blankets.
Noah had put it there after discovering the blue compartment empty.
Then forgotten.
Children are excellent at hiding things from adults.
They are terrible archivists.
The screen was dead.
Water damage.
Maria frowned.
“I never saw water near it.”
Neither had Noah.
Victoria denied touching it after the night captured on security footage.
Could have been an accident.
We did not need conspiracy for every damaged object.
Cloud backup mattered more.
School administrator restored the video.
Ninety-three seconds.
Most useless.
Noah narrating:
“This is Mom’s room and Dad says I can read here even if I don’t read.”
A child laughing.
Camera swinging.
Carpet.
Stairs.
Then Victoria’s voice below.
“…audit can’t reach the Mercer account if the subcontracts stay outside foundation reporting.”
Male voice through speaker.
Too faint initially.
Audio engineer improved intelligibility without inventing content.
Gavin.
We later confirmed.
He said:
“That’s not the problem. Amelia kept copies.”
Victoria:
“I know.”
Gavin:
“Do you know where?”
Victoria:
“No.”
Then:
“If Ethan finds the original, you’re finished.”
Gavin:
“Stop being dramatic.”
Victoria:
“I’m serious.”
Gavin:
“Then get counsel. Don’t touch anything.”
Pause.
Victoria:
“The boy was in the hall.”
Gavin:
“What boy?”
Victoria:
“Noah.”
Then movement.
Video ends.
The recording was more complicated than anyone expected.
It hurt Gavin.
It helped him.
“Don’t touch anything.”
Not an instruction to destroy evidence.
Could mean do not tamper.
Could also mean self-protection.
Context.
Victoria’s statement “you’re finished” suggested she believed the original damaging.
Gavin’s “stop being dramatic” suggested he did not share her urgency.
Or performed calm.
Again.
No perfect confession.
Then Noah’s camera briefly captured something none of us noticed at first.
A manila folder on the blue cabinet.
Label:
A.H. — Vendor Raw.
The photo was blurry.
But legible enough.
The folder no longer existed.
“Was that the original?” I asked Caleb.
“Could be supporting printouts.”
“USB?”
“Maybe stored with it.”
“Where did Amelia keep foundation records?”
“Multiple places.”
Useful and maddening.
Then the cloud account showed another file.
A photograph taken two days before Noah’s school video.
Noah had photographed a Lego structure.
In the background, the hidden compartment was open.
Inside:
Blue USB drive.
Silver key ring.
There.
The original likely remained in the house weeks before the incident.
Then Victoria accessed the tablet.
Viewed photo.
Entered Amelia’s room.
Afterward?
No later photograph showed the drive.
I confronted her through counsel.
“Did you take it?”
“No.”
“Did you see it?”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Did you touch it?”
“Yes.”
There.
“Where is it?”
“I gave it to Gavin.”
My body went cold.
Gavin’s counsel immediately requested separate questioning.
He had denied knowing where the original was.
Now problem.
“When?”
“Night I found it.”
“Did he ask?”
“No.”
“Why give it?”
“Because it involved him.”
“Where?”
“His house.”
“Did he keep it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him how you found it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him Noah’s tablet led you there?”
“Yes.”
“Then he knew about the tablet.”
Victoria froze.
Her earlier claim:
Gavin did not know.
His claim:
Noah recording? No.
Maybe technically he did not know about the recording.
But he knew tablet led to evidence.
We called Gavin back.
He admitted receiving the drive.
His attorney looked furious.
“Why did you deny?”
“I denied knowing Noah recorded Victoria.”
True.
Narrow truth.
Dangerous.
“What did you do with the drive?”
“Gave it to my lawyer.”
“Which?”
He named a firm.
Records showed delivery.
The drive still existed.
Preserved.
That was unexpected.
If Gavin intended destruction, he failed strangely.
Forensic copy revealed raw YouthBridge transactions.
Amelia’s suspicion was correct.
Funds moved through related entities.
Some into companies tied to Gavin.
Some legitimate.
Some questionable.
No sign Victoria stole money personally.
No secret millions in her account.
The story became less dramatic financially and more damning ethically.
Gavin had hidden conflicts.
Victoria had protected him.
The foundation’s controls were weak.
My leadership was absent.
And an eight-year-old had been terrorized because Victoria feared what an old USB might prove.
Not murder.
Not vast criminal empire.
Something more plausible.
May you like
A respectable family using layers, trust, and silence to protect itself until one frightened child refused to repeat the approved version.
