Chapter 4 - THE PHOTOGRAPH IN MABEL’S HANDMabel rented a small apartment above a florist in Port Chester, New York.

The staircase hurt her knees.

The radiator hissed.

The kitchen was small enough that she could touch the refrigerator and stove without taking a full step.

But it was clean.

And it was hers.

On her second night there, Mabel placed the photograph of baby Jasper on the table.

Beside it sat a blue metal box.

She had not opened it since Graham Aldridge died.

The key remained taped beneath the lid.

Mabel peeled it away.

Her hands trembled.

“Graham,” she whispered. “I hope I’m not making this worse.”

She unlocked the box.

Inside were envelopes.

A flash drive.

Copies of trust documents.

Several photographs.

And a sealed letter marked:

FOR JASPER — WHEN MABEL BELIEVES HE NEEDS TO KNOW.

Mabel did not open it.

That letter belonged to Jasper.

Underneath lay another envelope.

MABEL.

She had read that one before.

Many times.

Still, she opened it.

Graham’s handwriting filled two pages.

Mabel,

If you are reading this after I’m gone, then I am asking you to do something unfair.

Stay near Jasper.

Do not let my mistakes become his inheritance.

Mabel closed her eyes.

She remembered Graham during his final months.

Thin.

Tired.

Still working from bed when doctors told him to stop.

Still arguing with Valerie when they thought Jasper was asleep.

Graham had not been a perfect husband.

He knew it.

He had spent too much time working.

He could be controlling.

He could be cold.

But with Jasper, he changed.

Completely.

The letter continued.

Valerie loves him. I believe that. But Valerie also loves security, status, and control, and when she is frightened she makes decisions she can justify to herself.

There are financial protections around Jasper that she cannot change alone.

You know where the documents are.

Mabel read the final lines.

If Valerie ever tries to remove you suddenly, assume she has discovered your role.

Mabel’s breathing stopped.

She read it again.

If Valerie ever tries to remove you suddenly…

That was exactly what had happened.

The phone rang.

Mabel jumped.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a man.

“Mrs. Kerrigan?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Adrian Cole.”

Mabel went still.

She knew the name.

Graham’s estate attorney.

“I’ve been trying to reach you.”

“How did you get this number?”

“Mr. Aldridge left instructions.”

Mabel stared at the blue box.

“What instructions?”

“That if you ever left the Aldridge residence before Jasper turned eighteen, I was to contact you immediately.”

Her heart pounded.

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because your departure triggers a review of the child trust.”

Mabel sat down.

“What happened?”

“That is what I need to ask you.”

“Mrs. Aldridge fired me.”

Silence.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Did she give a reason?”

“No.”

Another pause.

Then Adrian said:

“Mrs. Kerrigan, has Valerie discovered the trust protector clause?”

Mabel looked down at the papers.

“I think so.”

Adrian exhaled.

“Then we need to meet.”

“Why?”

“Because two weeks ago she attempted to obtain approval for a loan against an asset she does not own.”

Mabel’s grip tightened.

“The house?”

“Yes.”

Mabel closed her eyes.

The mansion.

Graham had placed a major ownership share into Jasper’s trust years earlier.

Valerie could live there as Jasper’s guardian.

But she could not sell or mortgage the trust’s interest without approval.

Approval from the independent trustee.

And for extraordinary distributions involving Jasper’s residence—

from Mabel.

Valerie had probably just discovered that.

“What did you tell her?” Mabel asked.

“That additional consent was required.”

“Did you tell her mine?”

“No.”

“Then how did she know?”

“That is one of the questions I have.”

Mabel looked at Graham’s letter.

“Mr. Cole.”

“Yes?”

“Jasper cannot be dragged into this.”

“I agree.”

“He has already lost his father.”

“I know.”

“He thinks I abandoned him.”

Adrian was silent.

Mabel’s voice broke for the first time.

“She wouldn’t even let me say goodbye properly.”

Adrian softened.

“Then we should move carefully.”

Mabel wiped her eyes.

“When can you meet?”

“Tomorrow.”

She looked at the sealed envelope for Jasper.

“Come here.”

After the call, Mabel remained at the table.

She picked up the photograph.

Baby Jasper asleep against her chest.

Graham beside her.

Then she turned it over.

There was another sentence beneath the promise.

One she had almost forgotten.

When the house becomes more important than the child, choose the child.

May you like

Mabel whispered:

“I will.”
