Chapter 16 - WHAT ONYX HEARD AT MIDNIGHTEverett stopped asking Onyx questions.

The bird did not understand investigation.

It did not understand accusation.

It repeated sounds based on memory, stimulation, and habit.

Dana reminded everyone of that repeatedly.

“A parrot is not a witness.”

Everett understood.

But Onyx was still useful in one way.

Every phrase he repeated suggested a conversation had occurred somewhere near his perch.

So they reconstructed locations.

The bird usually slept near the staircase.

During the day, he was often moved into the sunroom.

At night, he could hear the lower hallway, living room, side entrance, and portions of the study corridor.

Security footage helped narrow dates.

Julian had entered the house at least twice.

Once three nights before the party.

Once two weeks earlier.

Celia had lied about both.

Preston had not known.

Lorraine had been at a charity event during the earlier visit.

Everett had been in Louisville.

That meant Celia and Julian had the lower floor almost to themselves.

Dana obtained the notary messages through Rebecca voluntarily.

One stood out.

Celia: He will sign if we choose the right time.

Rebecca: I need him alert and willing.

Celia: He’ll be alert enough.

Rebecca: That wording concerns me. I’m cancelling.

Celia: You’re overreacting.

Rebecca: Do not contact me again unless Mr. Holloway himself requests service.

Rebecca had saved everything.

Facts.

Independent facts.

Everett felt something inside him settle.

The bird had started the crisis.

But the case was becoming human.

Samuel traced another payment from Celia to a concierge medical service.

Dana immediately warned everyone not to jump to conclusions.

The service provided many legitimate things.

House calls.

IV hydration.

Travel medicine.

Sleep consultations.

Everett stared at the invoice.

“Sleep consultation.”

Preston looked sick.

Dana said, “We need records.”

The records came through proper consent and legal process.

The account was Celia’s.

She had requested information about prescription sleep aids.

Not for Everett.

For herself.

But one medication discussed matched the unidentified sedative found in Everett’s organizer.

That did not prove she placed it there.

It did prove access.

Then another fact appeared.

The prescription had been filled.

Thirty tablets.

Celia.

Preston stared at the pharmacy record.

“I’ve never seen her take these.”

Dana said, “That still proves only possession.”

Everett nodded.

“Good.”

Preston looked at him.

“Good?”

“Good that someone in this room remembers facts matter.”

Preston lowered his eyes.

That night, Everett sat alone near Onyx.

He looked at the bird.

“You know something, don’t you?”

Onyx preened.

Everett smiled.

“Worthless creature.”

Onyx looked up.

Then said in Julian’s voice:

“After he signs.”

Everett froze.

The parrot rocked once.

Then in Celia’s voice:

“Preston doesn’t need to know.”

Another pause.

Julian’s voice again:

“What about Lorraine?”

Celia:

“She’ll believe Preston.”

Everett went cold.

Onyx whistled.

Then:

“After he signs, we move fast.”

Everett grabbed his phone and called Preston and Lorraine down.

They came immediately.

He told them exactly what the bird had repeated.

Dana was called.

She listened and said:

“Do not build conclusions around this.”

Preston snapped.

“How can we not?”

“Because we don’t know when it was said, what the context was, or whether Onyx combined separate conversations.”

Everett nodded.

“She’s right.”

Preston looked frustrated.

Everett continued:

“But it tells us where to look.”

The next morning, they reviewed recovered audio metadata from the mansion’s smart-home system.

Most internal devices did not record conversation.

But the foyer voice assistant kept short diagnostic logs when activated by sound.

Usually worthless.

Three nights before the party, at 1:46 a.m., the system accidentally activated.

A seven-second fragment had been saved.

Static.

A man’s voice.

Julian.

“…after he signs…”

Then Celia:

“Preston doesn’t need to know.”

The recording ended.

Preston stared.

Everett did too.

Onyx had not invented it.

May you like

He had remembered.

And somewhere inside the missing conversation lay the rest.
