Chapter 17 - THE CRYSTAL GLASS WITH THE PEARL MARKThomas moved first.

He pulled the curtain aside.
No one stood there.
Only a narrow service opening built into the wall.
Whitaker Castle contained passages once used by servants to move food without entering formal rooms.
Most had been sealed.
This one had not.
An officer entered with a flashlight.
The passage extended behind the dining hall toward the library.
A small mechanical wire ran from the hidden opening to the table.
Someone could move the glass without entering the room.
Clara stared at it.
“They planned everything.”
“No,” I said. “They adapted old architecture.”
People describe elaborate crimes as brilliant because complexity impresses them.
Most schemes are ordinary greed using whatever doors happen to exist.
Police followed the wire.
It led to a storage room.
Inside were power controls, duplicate keys, and an active tablet connected to the castle network.
The device belonged to Nathaniel’s company.
Its camera was on.
Someone outside the castle could see us.
Detective Cross covered the lens.
The access records traced the connection to an account used by Nathaniel’s chief financial officer.
He had not attended the party.
He claimed Nathaniel asked him to monitor a “security test.”
The financial officer entered the remote system at nine, following scheduled instructions.
He did not know arrests had occurred.
When the screen displayed the cake and lit candles, he activated the blackout sequence.
Police instructed us to remain still.
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the chandeliers.
Snow screamed.
Clara gripped my hand.
Something moved inside the service passage.
An officer shouted.
A crash followed.
Then silence.
Emergency lights activated.
A man lay on the floor beside the curtain.
The museum archivist.
Samuel Price.
He had access to the old castle plans and the library cabinet.
Samuel had helped Nathaniel locate the document compartment.
He remained hidden after Victoria’s arrest.
His task was to recover both forged wills if the plan failed.
He carried a cloth bag.
Inside were Rebecca’s first forgery, replacement access cards, and a small lighter.
He intended to burn the documents.
Police arrested him.
The conspiracy was larger than our family.
But the motive remained centered on Nathaniel.
He offered money, positions, and access.
People who believed his inheritance inevitable accepted promises backed by my death.
The lights returned fully.
Snow flapped toward the chandelier, then back to Clara.
He looked at the overturned glass.
“Wrong one,” he said.
Then:
“Pearl for Eleanor.”
The bird knew which glass had been selected.
Detective Cross recovered the thin wire.
At its end was a small hook shaped to catch the stem of one specific glass.
The pearl marker was not merely for Rebecca.
It allowed the glass to be identified through a distant camera.
I looked at the ninety candles.
One had gone out during the blackout.
Clara reached toward it.
I stopped her.
“Not yet.”
The trap had caught Samuel.
May you like
But I needed one final answer from Snow.
The name of the voice that started everything.
