CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4 — THE CHILD THEY ERASED
No one spoke as the video began.
The David on the screen looked exhausted.
Sophia stood beside him, crying quietly.
The newborn child was wrapped in a blue blanket.
David looked directly into the camera.
“If I lose my memory, someone must tell me the truth.”
Present-day David gripped the back of a chair.
On the recording, Sophia kissed the baby’s forehead.
David continued.
“This child is my biological son.”
Eleanor whispered, “Turn it off.”
David ignored her.
“The clinic agreement was never about donor conception,” the recorded David said. “It was created to hide the pregnancy from the trust attorneys.”
Marcus looked stunned.
Sophia covered her mouth.
David turned toward her.
“You knew there was another child.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
She could barely answer.
“I don’t know.”
On the screen, David explained the rest.
Thomas Reed had discovered that the Walker trust would transfer enormous voting power to David’s first biological child. He threatened to kidnap the baby and use the child’s legal status to force control of the company.
To protect their son, David and Sophia secretly arranged for the baby to be placed with a trusted family until Thomas could no longer reach him.
The fertility documents were false records.
They were created to convince outsiders that David could not have a biological child.
Then came the accident.
David lost his memory.
The couple assigned to protect the baby disappeared.
And Eleanor persuaded Sophia never to tell David.
David stopped the video.
He looked at his mother.
“Why?”
Eleanor’s composure finally broke.
“Because I thought the child was safer if even you didn’t know.”
“You followed me onto the bridge.”
“I was trying to stop you from bringing him home.”
Laura Reed stepped forward.
“Tell him the rest.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Thomas had not died naturally.
He had been preparing to expose the hidden child when Eleanor confronted him. Their struggle ended with Thomas falling from a balcony.
Eleanor covered it up to protect the family.
Laura had spent two years searching for evidence.
She planted the transmitter because she believed public scandal was the only way to force the Walkers to reopen the past.
David turned to Sophia.
“And Noah?”
Sophia held the baby closer.
“Noah is yours.”
“But Charlie said—”
“The baby isn’t David’s son,” Laura interrupted. “That sentence wasn’t about Noah.”
She pointed to the video.
“It was something Thomas said about the first child. He believed the hidden baby belonged to someone else.”
David’s confusion deepened.
Laura removed one final document.
A recent DNA report.
“The first child was tested three months ago.”
David took the paper.
Probability of paternity: 0%.
He stared at Sophia.
Her face collapsed.
She shook her head.
“I never betrayed you.”
“Then whose child was he?”
Sophia looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor began to cry.
The truth had been buried even deeper.
Years earlier, before David married Sophia, Eleanor had arranged an illegal embryo transfer using material preserved from David’s deceased father. She wanted a guaranteed biological heir to the Walker bloodline, even if David could never produce one himself.
Sophia had agreed under pressure.
The first child was not David’s son.
He was David’s biological half-brother.
Noah, conceived naturally years later, was the only child who was truly David’s.
Charlie had never lied.
Everyone had simply assumed he was speaking about the baby in Sophia’s arms.
David looked down at Noah.
Then at the image of the missing child frozen on the screen.
“One child was used to protect an empire,” he said.
“And the other was nearly destroyed by the truth.”
Outside, police cars entered the driveway.
Eleanor understood they had come for her.
Before leaving, she handed David a folded address.
“The boy has been living under another name,” she whispered. “He is waiting for someone to tell him who he really is.”
David opened the paper.
The address belonged to a private boarding school in Connecticut.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
He already knows about Noah.
And he believes Noah stole his life.
