CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN ANDREW WAS TRYING TO SAVE
The police treated Evelyn Hayes’s disappearance as a kidnapping.
Her phone had been left on the guesthouse table.
Her medication remained untouched.
There was blood on the broken lamp, but not enough to indicate a life-threatening injury.
Jonathan read the letter again.
YOUR BROTHER DIDN’T STEAL THE MONEY.
HE WAS TRYING TO GET YOUR MOTHER BACK.
Rachel looked toward the detective.
“If Andrew was trying to save Evelyn, why did he forge our signatures?”
The answer came from Andrew himself.
At 9:14 that evening, he called Jonathan from an unknown number.
His voice sounded exhausted.
“Is Mom safe?”
“No. She’s missing.”
Andrew became silent.
Then he whispered, “I was too late.”
Jonathan’s anger returned.
“What did you do to Noah?”
“I never told Emma to hurt him.”
“You obtained the medication.”
“I was told it was harmless.”
“By whom?”
“Marcus Reed.”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“You worked with the man blackmailing Emma.”
“I was trying to control him.”
“You forged our signatures.”
“Yes.”
“You moved forty million dollars.”
“I was trying to pay a ransom.”
The room fell silent.
Andrew explained that six weeks earlier, Evelyn had discovered financial records proving Marcus Reed and several former Hayes employees had stolen millions from family companies.
She confronted Marcus privately.
Three days later, Andrew received a video showing his mother tied to a chair.
But the date on the recording was impossible.
Evelyn still appeared at family events.
She still lived in the guesthouse.
She still spoke with Jonathan.
“They didn’t kidnap her then,” Andrew said. “They wanted me to believe they could.”
The group threatened to take Evelyn unless Andrew transferred money from the children’s trusts.
He refused.
Then Marcus began following her.
Photographing her.
Entering the guesthouse while she slept.
Andrew panicked.
He agreed to create the transfer.
“But why frame Rachel?” Jonathan asked.
“That wasn’t part of my plan.”
“The forged feeding instructions carried Rachel’s name.”
“I signed the transfer documents. Nothing involving Noah.”
Marcus had added the child-abuse scheme himself.
It provided leverage over both Andrew and the family.
If the transfer failed, Marcus would release footage suggesting Rachel had ordered the abuse.
If Andrew confessed, the bank records would make him look like the thief.
Every Hayes family member had been positioned to blame another.
Andrew gave the police his location.
He was hiding inside an abandoned office owned by one of the family companies.
Detectives found him alone.
He had not kidnapped Evelyn.
He had not planned to flee the country.
His suitcase contained cash and medical supplies intended for his mother if Marcus released her.
Andrew surrendered without resistance.
The police played Lily’s recording for him.
The voice ordering Emma to make Noah finish did not belong to Andrew.
It belonged to Marcus.
But Andrew was not innocent.
He had obtained the medication without parental permission.
He had forged financial documents.
He had kept the threats secret.
His fear had helped Marcus place Noah in danger.
Andrew admitted everything.
“I thought I could fix it before anyone knew.”
Jonathan looked at him through the interrogation-room glass.
“That sentence has destroyed more families than any confession.”
The investigation returned to Evelyn’s companies.
The money did not belong to her.
Her name had been added to the corporate accounts using forged documents.
Marcus planned to make it appear that Evelyn and Andrew had stolen the trusts together.
If the plan succeeded, Marcus would disappear with the funds while the Hayes family turned on itself.
But where had he taken Evelyn?
Lily provided the next clue.
She remembered seeing a white delivery van outside the estate three times during the previous week. The side displayed the logo of a home-medical company.
Emma recognized it too.
The so-called vitamin drops had arrived in the same type of van.
Police traced the logo to a warehouse in East Los Angeles leased by one of Marcus’s shell companies.
A tactical team entered the building shortly before midnight.
They found hidden cameras, forged passports, blackmail files, and a room designed to resemble part of the Hayes guesthouse.
The kidnapping video shown to Andrew had been filmed there with an actress.
But Evelyn was not inside.
On a desk sat a live video monitor displaying the Hayes mansion.
The family had been watched through hidden devices for months.
One screen showed the dining room.
Another showed Jonathan’s study.
A third showed the guesthouse kitchen.
On that screen, officers saw Evelyn sitting in a chair.
Alive.
The feed was delayed by exactly two hours.
The video had been recorded before she disappeared.
A man entered the frame and placed a hand on her shoulder.
His face appeared clearly.
It was not Marcus Reed.
It was Mr. Alvarez, the gardener who had broken the patio glass and supposedly rescued Lily.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“He saved the children.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“No. He made sure we found the camera.”
Alvarez had brought the package from Evelyn.
He had entered the dining room at the exact moment Emma’s plan began to collapse.
He knew where every exterior camera pointed.
He knew the family’s routines better than anyone.
And he had worked for the Hayes family for twenty-two years.
The police returned to the mansion.
Mr. Alvarez was gone.
So was his truck.
Inside the gardener’s cottage, they found recent photographs of Evelyn, maps of the family properties, and a typed list of demands.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
MARCUS THINKS HE CONTROLS THE OPERATION.
HE DOESN’T KNOW I’M TAKING EVELYN TONIGHT.
For the first time, the investigation made sense.
Marcus had designed the fraud.
Andrew had tried to pay him.
Emma had become his weapon.
But Alvarez had been using all of them for a different reason.
He did not want the children’s money.
He wanted Evelyn Hayes.
