Chapter 11 - THE CLIFF WHERE LAURA DISAPPEAREDJudith wanted me at the cliff before midnight.

Samuel refused.
Laura agreed with him.
Sophie did not.
“She won’t release Connor if Rachel stays away.”
“She won’t release him if Rachel goes,” Samuel replied.
The address was bait.
But bait revealed where the trap had been placed.
Police surrounded the coastal road without approaching the final overlook.
I remained inside an armored vehicle with Laura and Samuel.
At 11:43, my phone rang.
Video call.
Judith appeared on the screen.
She wore a black coat over plain clothes.
Without the emerald silk and pearls, she looked smaller.
Not weaker.
Only less decorated.
Connor knelt behind her.
His face was bruised. Blood marked his white wedding shirt. His hands were bound.
The image of him on his knees did not satisfy me.
That surprised me.
I had imagined justice making him feel what he demanded from me.
Instead, I saw another person being controlled through humiliation.
I would not become Judith to prove she had harmed me.
“Come to the edge,” Judith said.
“I’m here.”
“Alone.”
“No.”
She pressed a gun against Connor’s neck.
He closed his eyes.
“Rachel, don’t.”
Judith struck him with the weapon.
Laura flinched beside me.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“The pendant, the ledger and Laura’s statement withdrawing every accusation.”
“You know investigators have copies.”
“A living witness can still create doubt.”
“You spent twenty-two years calling her delusional. Why fear her now?”
For the first time, Judith shouted.
“Because people believe whatever a beautiful victim says on camera.”
Laura leaned toward my phone.
“They believe evidence.”
Judith’s face changed.
“Laura.”
“I’m here.”
“You always did hide behind other people.”
“You locked me behind other people.”
Connor looked toward the screen.
“Laura, I’m sorry.”
She did not comfort him.
“You should be.”
Samuel traced the signal.
The call was not coming from the main overlook.
It came from inside a storm tunnel below the cliff.
Police teams moved silently toward it.
I kept Judith talking.
“Why bring the dress to my wedding?”
“I wanted what she hid.”
“You could have cut it open.”
“I did. Years ago.”
My breath caught.
“You found nothing?”
“Laura was clever. The lower hem had been resewn after I searched it. I assumed Elizabeth moved the evidence.”
Laura whispered beside me, “The seamstress reversed the lining.”
Judith continued.
“When Connor chose you, I realized the dress might respond to the correct owner.”
“It wasn’t magic.”
“No. It was sentiment. People reveal hidden compartments when handling objects tied to grief.”
“You thought I would recognize it?”
“I thought your body might.”
The answer was horrifying.
Judith understood trauma well enough to weaponize instinct.
“Did Connor know you planned to force me to wear it?”
“He knew enough.”
Connor lowered his head.
Judith smiled.
“He always knows enough to benefit and never enough to feel responsible.”
That sentence hurt him because it was true.
Samuel received a silent message.
Teams had reached the tunnel.
Two armed men guarded the lower entrance.
One was a former federal marshal.
The other worked for Pembroke security.
“Release him,” I said.
“Bring me Laura.”
“No.”
Judith pulled Connor’s head backward.
“You once loved him.”
“I did.”
“Then save him.”
“Love does not make me responsible for your violence.”
Connor opened his eyes.
He looked directly at the phone.
“Rachel, she has explosives.”
Judith struck him again.
An explosion shook the tunnel.
The video spun.
Police shouted.
The call disconnected.
Samuel ordered the driver forward.
We reached the cliff as smoke poured from openings below the road.
Officers carried Connor out first.
He was alive.
Laura watched the tunnel.
“Where is Judith?”
A second team emerged.
They had arrested the guards.
No Judith.
A hidden sea passage opened beneath the cliff. A boat had been waiting.
She escaped before the explosion.
Connor was placed on a stretcher.
As paramedics treated him, he caught my wrist gently.
“Judith isn’t running,” he whispered.
“What do you mean?”
“She’s going back to Seacliff.”
“Why?”
May you like
His eyes filled with terror.
“Because the wedding guests are still there.”
