Chapter 12 - THE DETECTIVE ON LORRAINE’S PAYROLLColin Reese had been paid by the Davenport Family Foundation for eleven years.

Not directly.
Money moved through consulting companies owned by his brother.
Reese altered police reports.
Warned Lorraine before searches.
Removed the sash from evidence.
He also supplied the private information used in my psychiatric affidavit.
Calls I made after suspicious vehicles followed Grace.
A report about someone entering our backyard.
A complaint that medication bottles appeared inside my bathroom cabinet.
Reese marked each claim unfounded.
Then Tyler gave those reports to Dr. Mercer as proof of paranoia.
The intrusions were real.
The same people creating danger documented my awareness of it as illness.
Mara placed Grace and me under federal protection.
Our location changed every forty-eight hours.
Grace stopped asking which bedroom was ours.
She asked how many nights we would stay.
I hated the adaptation.
Children should learn home through safety, not schedules.
Reese contacted Mara three days later.
He wanted immunity.
He said Lorraine ordered him to disappear but refused to fund his escape.
Even criminals eventually discovered her loyalty moved in only one direction.
He surrendered at a roadside church.
During questioning, Reese described the final stage of Lorraine’s plan.
If the guardianship succeeded, I would enter Wellspring.
If I resisted, police would arrest me for violating the emergency order.
Reese intended to place sedatives in my holding-cell water.
A transfer ambulance would then take me to Wellspring.
No independent doctor would examine me.
By Thursday, I would appear visibly impaired.
The yacht accident would look believable.
“What about Grace?” Mara asked.
Reese looked at the table.
“The child was a backup.”
“Say what that means.”
“If Megan survived, Grace would not.”
“Who decided?”
“Tyler drafted both scenarios.”
My husband had designed the decision tree.
My death first.
Our daughter’s if necessary.
Lorraine approved.
Ashley operationalized it.
Reese protected the police record.
Dr. Mercer supplied the diagnosis.
Wellspring supplied the drugs.
Curtis supplied intimidation.
No single villain carried the whole plan.
That made it more dangerous.
Everyone performed a manageable piece.
Reese handed investigators a storage key.
Inside a private warehouse, police found furniture from a room staged to resemble our home.
A duplicate of Grace’s bed.
Copies of my clothes.
Prescription bottles.
A broken wineglass with my fingerprints transferred from a family dinner.
Fake blood.
They intended to photograph a manufactured domestic incident if the party footage failed.
One wall held a calendar.
Thursday was circled.
Below it, Tyler had written:
M — WATER.
G — FIRE.
DECIDE AFTER HEARING.
I stared at his handwriting.
The M formed the same way it did in my birthday cards.
For years, those letters said love.
Now they labeled methods of death.
Reese also produced the unedited audio Tyler deleted from his phone.
Before guests entered the drawing room, Tyler spoke with Lorraine.
“If Megan only leaves, we gain nothing.”
“She’ll return for Grace,” Lorraine said.
“And if she contacts Dana?”
“Then the police order takes the child before Dana can act.”
“What if the judge reviews the bruise?”
“Make sure there is no bruise.”
Lorraine had expected restraint.
Then she struck Grace hard enough to leave a mark.
Even Tyler sounded surprised in the recording.
But after the slap, he did not stop.
He adjusted his tie.
He summoned Ashley.
The plan continued.
Reese entered witness protection pending trial.
His cooperation did not free him.
He pleaded guilty to evidence tampering, conspiracy and obstruction.
Mara personally audited every case he touched.
Four women previously described as unstable had reported threats connected to Davenport properties.
One disappeared seven years earlier.
Her name was Marisol Vega.
She worked as a Wellspring nurse.
Her car was found near the harbor.
No body.
Inside the warehouse, police discovered Marisol’s hospital badge.

The conspiracy surrounding Grace was not Lorraine’s first.
It was only the first one exposed before the planned accident occurred.
