Chapter 11 - VANESSA’S FIRST LIEVanessa’s first formal statement lasted twenty-three minutes.

She claimed the powder was a nutritional supplement.

The packet had no supplement label.

She claimed my doctor recommended it.

My doctor was dead.

She named a replacement physician.

That physician had never treated me.

She claimed I signed the power of attorney voluntarily.

Handwriting analysis showed the signature was traced.

She claimed Noah misunderstood the signature practice.

Recovered pages showed more than forty attempts to copy my name.

She claimed the slap occurred after I tried to injure her with the wheelchair.

Security footage showed I was stationary.

Each lie required another.

By the end, even her attorney asked to pause the interview.

Vanessa refused.

She began describing me as aggressive, paranoid, and mentally unstable.

The detective asked when I was last evaluated.

Vanessa provided a date.

The clinic had no record of the appointment.

She gave a doctor’s name.

The doctor existed.

Dr. Audrey Lane.

A geriatric specialist who once treated Vanessa’s late grandmother.

Phone records showed repeated calls between them.

Dr. Lane was the contact saved as A.

Detectives interviewed her.

At first, she claimed the calls concerned general caregiving advice.

Then they found a payment from Vanessa.

$75,000.

Labeled private consultation.

Dr. Lane had never met me.

Still, she prepared a preliminary capacity statement based on Vanessa’s descriptions and edited recordings.

She also advised Vanessa how sedation might resemble cognitive decline.

She denied recommending any specific illegal act.

Messages complicated that denial.

A: She must be observed during episodes.

VANESSA: I can create an episode before Caleb returns.

A: I did not ask how.

Dr. Lane understood enough to avoid explicit language.

She accepted money anyway.

Police searched her office.

They found a draft report declaring me incapable of financial decisions.

The report was dated for the following week.

Vanessa planned to submit it with the power of attorney.

If challenged, Dr. Lane would claim she relied on family observations and recorded behavior.

My artificially created symptoms would become professional evidence.

The doctor was arrested on fraud-related charges and investigated for medical misconduct.

Her license was suspended.

When Vanessa learned this, her defense changed.

She blamed Dr. Lane.

The doctor blamed Vanessa.

Neither mentioned the person harmed until investigators asked.

That became the pattern.

Everyone explained themselves.

No one asked how I felt.

Except Noah.

During a hospital visit, he sat beside my wheelchair and studied my cheek.

“Does it still hurt?”

“A little.”

“Do you hate Mom?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Hate takes more energy than I want to give her actions.”

“Do you love her?”

“I love the person I hoped she would be.”

He considered that.

“Is that the same?”

May you like

“No.”

It was the first lie I refused to tell him.
