Chapter 21 - JULIAN CHOOSES A SIDEJulian met the Ellington board Monday morning.

He requested the meeting.

August attended but did not chair it.

Julian stood.

“I need to disclose a conflict of judgment.”

Board members looked uncomfortable.

He explained his relationship with Genevieve.

His awareness that she disliked Maris.

His failure to intervene.

He did not exaggerate.

Did not claim conspiracy.

He said:

“I prioritized my perceived position in this family over basic judgment.”

One director asked:

“Why bring this to the board?”

“Because I have been considered a possible successor.”

August watched.

“And because succession based on reputation without scrutiny would repeat exactly the kind of mistake this company says it avoids.”

The room went quiet.

Julian continued.

“I’m not withdrawing from leadership.”

August’s mouth almost twitched.

“I’m withdrawing from assumption.”

Afterward August called him into his office.

“That was either courageous or strategically brilliant.”

Julian sighed.

“I learned from you.”

“Unfortunately both are possible.”

Julian sat.

“Do you still think I could run this company?”

“Yes.”

Julian looked surprised.

August continued.

“Eventually.”

“Not Maris?”

“Stop asking the wrong question.”

Julian frowned.

“This company does not belong to whoever shares the most blood with me.”

That statement would have been unthinkable years ago.

August continued:

“It belongs, after me, to a governance structure we should have built instead of letting everyone speculate about dynasty.”

Julian laughed.

“Maris did this to you.”

“No.”

August looked toward a photograph of his late wife.

“Losing Maris did.”

Julian looked down.

Later he called Maris.

“Congratulations.”

“For?”

“You accidentally modernized corporate governance.”

She laughed.

“Put it on my résumé.”

Their relationship improved after that.

Not because competition disappeared.

Because it was finally named.

Meanwhile Genevieve watched Julian’s board statement leak through business press.

He had chosen accountability.

Which left her isolated.

She called him once.

He answered.

“Was any of it real?”

She asked.

Julian paused.

“Yes.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Because real feelings do not excuse what you did.”

Genevieve cried.

He listened.

Then said:

“I hope you figure out why humiliating Maris mattered so much to you.”

She whispered:

“She took everything.”

“No.”

Julian’s voice softened.

“You built your life around things that were never guaranteed.”

May you like

He hung up.

For the first time, Genevieve had no one else to blame who still answered.
