Chapter 14 - The Recording Linda Wanted DestroyedJames listened inside the police station.

Not because he wanted to.

Because evidence had to be handled properly.

A detective copied the recording first.

Then they played the entire file.

Sarah’s voice filled the small interview room.

“James, I don’t know if Linda pushed your father.”

James gripped the table.

“I need to make that clear. I did not see it.”

He breathed out.

Sarah continued.

“But I heard what happened before the fall.”

The recording described the argument.

Daniel accused Linda of stealing from their mother.

Linda denied it.

Daniel threatened to contact police.

Then Sarah heard Linda say:

“If you ruin me, I’ll ruin James too.”

James closed his eyes.

His father responded:

“Leave my son out of this.”

Then footsteps.

A crash.

Afterward, Sarah saw Linda standing at the top of the stairs.

Linda claimed Daniel slipped.

Sarah noticed something else.

Linda had been holding Daniel’s folder.

The folder containing financial evidence.

It disappeared after his death.

James opened his eyes.

The detective paused the recording.

“Did that folder ever turn up?”

“No.”

The recording resumed.

“I didn’t tell you, James, because your father was already gone, and I had no proof. Then I became sick. I was afraid of spending whatever time I had left destroying your family with an accusation I couldn’t prove.”

James’s eyes burned.

“I’m sorry.”

The recording went silent for several seconds.

Then Sarah spoke again.

“But Linda came to see me in the hospital.”

James looked up.

“She asked what would happen to Emily financially if I died.”

His hands tightened.

“I lied to her. I told her there was almost nothing.”

James almost smiled despite everything.

That sounded like Sarah.

“She didn’t believe me.”

Then Sarah’s voice weakened.

“I think she will eventually come after what belongs to Emily.”

The recording ended.

James sat motionless.

The detective leaned back.

“This doesn’t prove a crime related to your father’s death.”

“I know.”

“But it establishes a long history of financial conflict.”

James nodded.

“And motive.”

“Possibly.”

James looked through the observation window.

Linda sat in another room with an attorney.

She had stopped talking to police.

Roy had done the same.

Denise, however, had started talking.

A lot.

She admitted Linda instructed everyone to support the “unstable soldier” narrative if James returned angry.

She admitted signing the false witness statement.

She admitted seeing Emily placed in the kennel on multiple occasions.

Her excuse was that she feared Linda.

James had no sympathy left.

Then Denise revealed something new.

Linda had been negotiating with a private lender.

Using the house.

The lender required proof of ownership.

Linda tried forging it.

When that failed, she planned to claim James was incapacitated and have herself appointed to manage his affairs.

James stared at the detective.

“She wanted control of me too.”

“Financial control.”

“So Plan B wasn’t just about Emily.”

“No.”

Linda had built a trap.

If James returned and quietly accepted the financial losses, she kept the lifestyle.

If he objected, she intended to use his anger against him.

If she gained custody of Emily, she could strengthen access to benefits and influence trust distributions.

If she convinced a court James was unstable, she might gain even more leverage.

But she had made one mistake.

She expected him to return on schedule.

Instead, he arrived early.

He saw the truth before anyone could stage it.

The kennel.

The hose.

The chain.

The laughter.

James’s surprise homecoming had destroyed months of preparation in three seconds.

His phone buzzed.

Thomas.

James answered.

“I found something in the trust records,” Thomas said.

“What?”

“A request.”

“From Linda?”

“No.”

James frowned.

“From who?”

“Sarah.”

“What kind of request?”

Thomas hesitated.

“She asked me to prepare a sealed guardianship recommendation in case both of you became unavailable.”

James’s pulse changed.

“Who did she choose?”

“Not Linda.”

“Who?”

“I think you need to hear this directly from the person.”

James closed his eyes.

“Tom, I’m done with surprises.”

“This one matters.”

“Who did Sarah trust with Emily?”

Thomas gave him a name.

James sat back.

He had not heard it in years.

Rebecca Hayes.

Sarah’s younger sister.

The woman who had disappeared from their lives after Sarah’s funeral.

James had always believed Rebecca abandoned Emily.

But according to Thomas—

May you like

Rebecca had tried to become part of her life.

And Linda had made sure James never knew.
