Chapter 19 - CAROL REFUSES TO SEE HERSELF AS THE VILLAIN

Carol’s breakthrough came after Owen refused her Christmas gift.
A large remote-control truck.
He sent it back through Adam.
No note.
Carol called Lena furious.
“You’re poisoning him.”
Lena replied:
“I didn’t tell him to return it.”
“He’s eight.”
“Yes.”
“He doesn’t make decisions like this alone.”
“He does when the decision is whether he wants a gift from someone he’s afraid of.”
Carol went silent.
“You’re letting him control adults.”
“No.”
Lena’s voice stayed calm.
“I’m letting him have boundaries around contact.”
Carol began crying.
“I’m his grandmother.”
“Yes.”
“I love him.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised Carol.
“Then why?”
“Because love is not the same as safety.”
Silence.
Carol whispered:
“I would never hurt him.”
“You needed him to cry.”
Carol closed her eyes.
Lena continued.
“You keep returning to what you didn’t intend.”
“What else am I supposed to say?”
“What happened.”
Carol looked away.
Lena said:
“You frightened him.”
“Yes.”
“You called him a thief.”
“Yes.”
“You struck his arm.”
“Yes.”
“You told him he might have to live with you if I couldn’t manage him.”
“Yes.”
“And you did it to protect money and Adam’s company.”
Carol’s face twisted.
“I did it to save the family.”
Lena exhaled.
“No.”
“What?”
“You did it to save what you thought the family should look like.”
Carol went silent.
A company.
A marriage.
A house.
Assets intact.
Everyone in assigned positions.
That image mattered more to Carol than the people’s consent inside it.
Lena said:
“Owen was not fine.”
Carol cried.
For once, she did not say he would be.
That was progress.
Small.
Painful.
May you like
Real.
