CHAPTER 3 The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Return

Investigator Ryan Brooks stared at the faded photograph for a long moment.
The red paint.
The mansion.
The same iron gate.
Twenty-six years apart.
Yet almost identical.
Jason broke the silence.
"The forensic lab finished examining the envelope."
Ryan looked up.
"And?"
"No fingerprints."
Ryan wasn't surprised.
"Gloves."
Jason nodded.
"But..."
"The stamp wasn't mailed."
Ryan frowned.
"It wasn't?"
"It was hand-delivered."
Ryan immediately looked toward Katherine.
"Did anyone approach the house this week?"
She thought for a moment.
"Yesterday."
"Who?"
"A delivery driver."
"What did he bring?"
"A flower arrangement."
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
"Did you order flowers?"
"No."
"Was there a card?"
Katherine nodded slowly.
"I threw it away."
"What did it say?"
She closed her eyes, trying to remember.
Only five words.
Some memories never disappear.
Ryan felt a chill run down his spine.
The flowers.
The photograph.
The vandal.
None of them were meant to damage the mansion.
They were meant to frighten one person.
Katherine Lawson.
Ryan walked to the library.
Old family albums filled an entire bookshelf.
He stopped at one photograph.
Michael Lawson.
Smiling beside Katherine.
Standing beneath the exact oak tree where the vandals had been hiding the previous night.
Ryan compared the background.
The tree had barely changed.
Someone knew this property intimately.
Too intimately.
Jason entered carrying another report.
"We found the burner phone."
Ryan smiled.
"Good."
"It was wiped."
"Expected."
"But there was one thing left."
"What?"
"A voicemail."
Ryan looked up.
"The sender never realized it stayed in the deleted folder."
Jason pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A man's voice.
Distorted.
Calm.
"Don't hurt anyone."
A pause.
"Just throw the paint."
Another pause.
"She'll understand I'm still here."
Ryan slowly looked toward Katherine.
She had stopped breathing.
Tears filled her eyes.
She whispered only one sentence.
"That's Michael."
Jason looked surprised.
"You're certain?"
She nodded.
"I've heard that voice for forty years."
Ryan remained silent.
If she was right...
Michael Lawson hadn't disappeared.
He had chosen to stay hidden.
But why?
Before anyone could speak again...
An officer rushed into the room.
"Ryan."
"We found the second vandal."
Ryan turned.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"But..."
"He's asking for you."
"What did he say?"
The officer swallowed.
"He said..."
'Tell Katherine... he never stopped watching the house.'
The room fell silent.

FINAL CHAPTER
The Truth Was Hidden Behind One Promise
The second vandal sat quietly inside the interrogation room.
Unlike the first man...
He wasn't afraid.
Ryan placed the old photograph on the table.
"Who hired you?"
The man looked at it.
Then smiled sadly.
"I promised him I wouldn't say."
Ryan leaned forward.
"You don't even know his name."
"No."
"I only knew him as Mr. M."
"When did you meet him?"
"Three months ago."
"Where?"
"At a marina in Fort Lauderdale."
Ryan listened carefully.
"He paid cash."
"He said nobody would get hurt."
"He only wanted Katherine to know..."
"...that he'd kept his promise."
Ryan frowned.
"What promise?"
The man shrugged.
"I don't know."
Back at the mansion...
Ryan asked Katherine one final question.
"Why would your husband disappear without contacting you for twenty-six years?"
She remained silent.
For almost a minute.
Then she stood.
Walked toward an old piano.
Opened a hidden compartment beneath the keyboard.
Inside lay a faded envelope.
Ryan looked at the date.
Twenty-six years old.
She handed him the letter.
"I found this the morning after Michael disappeared."
"You never showed the police?"
She shook her head.
"I couldn't."
Ryan opened it.
The handwriting matched the old family albums.
Michael's.
The letter was short.
Katherine,
If you're reading this...
I've already disappeared.
Someone inside the company stole millions.
They've decided to blame me.
If I stay...
You'll lose everything.
If I disappear...
You'll inherit everything.
One day, when everyone involved is gone...
I'll come home.
Wait for me.
Love always.
Michael.
Ryan slowly folded the letter.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The red paint.
The old photograph.
The flowers.
The vandal.
None of it was revenge.
None of it was intimidation.
It was a signal.
Michael had survived.
For twenty-six years.
He had protected Katherine from the shadows.
Now...
Believing the people who wanted him dead were finally gone...
He was trying to come home.
Ryan looked at Katherine.
"Do you think he's alive?"
She smiled through tears.
"I never stopped believing."
Ryan quietly closed the case.
The vandalism charges remained.
But there had never been a conspiracy to attack the mansion.
Only an old man...
Keeping the promise he had made to the woman he loved.
