Chapter 16 - What Lillian Really Promised EstelleThe ownership agreement had a duplicate.

Samuel Price kept one.
Evelyn found it the next morning.
Lillian had offered Estelle twenty percent ownership of a new company.
Not Harbor House itself.
The company would provide residential staffing and property-management services.
Lillian planned to invest $250,000.
Estelle would operate it.
If successful, her ownership could increase to forty percent over five years.
The company was never formed.
Lillian died first.
The agreement was preliminary and contingent.
No transfer of Harbor House ownership existed.
Darius understood why Estelle clung to it.
For someone who spent her adult life working inside other people’s homes, this may have represented independence.
But Lillian’s death killed the opportunity.
Then Everett used Estelle’s wrongdoing to keep her under control.
Years became decades.
Resentment hardened into entitlement.
Simone read the agreement.
“She could have built something.”
“Yes.”
“Instead she stayed with Dad.”
Darius nodded.
Fear initially.
Then money.
Then power.
Estelle discovered that controlling the Bennett family’s secrets could be more profitable than building her own company.
The tragedy did not excuse the crimes.
It made them more comprehensible.
Brooks said, “People sometimes become attached to the life they believe was stolen from them.”
Darius looked toward Harbor House through photographs.
“And then steal someone else’s.”
Exactly.
Police now knew Estelle remained nearby.
Her rental car was found abandoned.
Investigators believed she had cash and perhaps assistance.
Arthur denied further contact.
No evidence proved otherwise.
The Bennett mansion received a new security system.
The basement door lock was removed.
Darius personally unscrewed it.
Malik watched.
“What are you doing?”
“Taking this off.”
“Why?”
“So nobody can lock it from the hallway.”
Malik looked at the old lock in his father’s palm.
“Can I have it?”
Darius hesitated.
“What for?”
“I don’t know.”
He handed it over.
Malik examined the heavy iron mechanism.
The object that had terrified him now fit in two hands.
He put it on his desk.
Darius wondered whether that was healthy.
Malik’s therapist later said something that stayed with him.
“Children often need to transform frightening objects into ordinary objects they can control.”
Darius looked toward the basement.
Perhaps adults did too.
Court hearings began regarding the mansion and Harbor House.
No one contested Lillian’s signature on the later declaration.
The evidence of the forged earlier amendment was strong.
Simone’s ownership claim became increasingly likely.
Darius filed a consent statement.
He would not oppose equal division.
The judge seemed surprised.
Evelyn was not.
After court, reporters waited.
News of the decades-old Bennett trust dispute had become public.
A journalist shouted:
“Mr. Bennett, did your father steal from your mother?”
Darius stopped.
Simone looked at him.
He could have said no comment.
Instead:
“The records indicate my father transferred assets without proper authorization. We are cooperating with the court to correct the ownership record.”
Another reporter:
“Did your housekeeper participate?”
“That is part of an active criminal investigation.”
“Are you embarrassed by your family history?”
Darius paused.
“Yes.”
Cameras leaned closer.
“But embarrassment is not a reason to hide records that affect other people’s rights.”
Simone’s expression changed.
Later she said, “Dad would have hated that.”
“I know.”
“Mom would have loved it.”
Darius smiled.
“Probably.”
That evening, Detective Brooks called.
Estelle’s lawyer had contacted police again.
This time Estelle did not want property.
She wanted safe surrender terms.
Brooks sounded skeptical.
“Do you think she’ll come in?” Darius asked.
“She says yes.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
Darius exhaled.
Then Brooks added:
“She wants to speak with you first.”
“No.”
“Good.”
Darius blinked.
“You’re not even going to discuss it?”
“No private meetings. No negotiations outside counsel.”
Darius agreed.
At 8:00 the next morning, Estelle did not appear.
At 8:15, her lawyer said he could no longer reach her.
At 8:23, the mansion security system sent Darius an alert.
Movement.
Inside the basement.
May you like
Someone had entered through an old service tunnel beneath the east wing.
And Malik was upstairs.
