Chapter 10: The Camera Ryan Forgot

The hospital security footage became the first crack in Ryan Morrison’s polished life.

The second crack came from his own phone.

After his arrest, detectives obtained messages between Ryan and Eleanor. Not every message was direct, but enough of them painted a clear picture. Eleanor had demanded Clara’s appearance at the dinner. Ryan had replied that Clara was “becoming a problem.” Eleanor had written, “Problems are handled before they become public.”

Owen read that line twice.

It was not enough on its own, but it helped.

Then came the third crack.

Paul, the security guard, remembered something from the parking garage footage. Ryan had looked toward the obvious camera, but St. Anne’s had installed a second, smaller camera near the elevator after an equipment theft. Ryan had not noticed it.

That camera captured the angle he thought he had hidden.

It showed Clara trying to leave.

It showed Ryan blocking her path.

It showed enough.

When Owen visited Clara again two days later, she looked stronger, though still pale. A social worker had helped her contact an attorney. The hospital had restricted Ryan and Eleanor from visiting. A temporary protection order was being prepared.

Owen placed a copy of the updated report on the table.

“You were right about the documents,” he said.

Clara’s fingers tightened around her cup of tea. “You found them?”

“We found evidence that your signature may have been copied onto financial forms. We’re still investigating.”

Clara closed her eyes.

For months, Ryan had made her think she was paranoid. Every strange bank notice, every paper he snatched away, every sudden demand that she sign something quickly—he had explained all of it until she felt foolish for questioning him.

But she had not been foolish.

She had been trapped.

“Will Eleanor be charged?” Clara asked.

Owen did not make promises. “We’re looking at her role.”

Clara nodded. She appreciated the honesty more than comfort.

That evening, a local news station reported that businessman Ryan Morrison had been arrested after an incident involving his wife at St. Anne’s Hospital. The report did not name Clara at first, but everyone in Eleanor’s circle knew.

By morning, sponsors began canceling meetings.

By noon, Victor Langford withdrew from negotiations.

By sunset, Eleanor’s birthday dinner had become the most expensive disaster she had ever hosted.
