Chapter 13: The House Clara Never Wanted

The Morrison house felt smaller when Clara returned with her attorney and two officers to collect her belongings.

Maybe it was because she was no longer afraid of the marble floors.

Maybe it was because Ryan was not there.

Or maybe the house had always been small, hidden beneath expensive furniture and oversized portraits.

Eleanor stood in the foyer, watching as Clara entered. She looked older than before. Not weak, exactly, but reduced. The staff no longer rushed around her with the same nervous devotion. Rumors had power, and Eleanor had spent her life feeding on them. Now they fed on her.

“You could have had everything,” Eleanor said.

Clara paused on the staircase.

“No,” she replied. “I could have disappeared inside everything.”

She went upstairs to the bedroom she had once shared with Ryan. Her clothes were still arranged by color because Ryan liked closets to look “presentable.” Her books were stacked on the lowest shelf because Eleanor once said serious books made a room feel unfeminine. Her mother’s photograph was in a drawer.

Clara took the photograph first.

Then she packed practical things. Documents. A few clothes. Her laptop. The small jewelry box her mother had given her. She left the dresses Eleanor chose. She left the shoes that hurt her feet. She left the framed wedding portrait in which Ryan smiled and Clara looked like someone trying to follow instructions.

In the laundry room, behind the towels, Clara found the small bag she had packed the day she tried to leave.

She sat on the floor and held it for a long moment.

That bag had been her first act of rebellion. Small. Messy. Incomplete. But real.

Her attorney appeared in the doorway. “Are you okay?”

Clara nodded.

As they left, Eleanor called after her.

“What will you do now?” she asked, as if life outside the Morrison name were a punishment.

Clara looked back once.

“I’ll find out,” she said.

Then she walked out of the house without asking permission.
