Chapter 18 - Renee Returns to the MansionRenee returned alone.

Two years after the incident.
The mansion had become partly a foundation venue.
The foyer looked different.
No trash bin.
No heavy family portraits dominating the walls.
Eleanor’s charitable foundation had installed photographs of scholarship recipients and community projects.
Renee stood where she had seen Micah.
Her body remembered before her mind did.
Heart faster.
Hands cold.
Then she breathed.
Nothing happened.
A staff member passed carrying flowers.
“Mrs. Renee?”
“Just Renee.”
They smiled.
Renee walked toward the corner.
The exact location.
Empty.
She did not need to touch anything.
Did not need to declare victory.
She simply stood.
Then left.
At home Micah asked:
“Where you go?”
“The big house.”
He looked up.
“Grandpa house?”
Renee paused.
“Kind of.”
“Harold?”
He no longer called him Grandpa.
Therapist’s influence?
Maybe memory.
“Harold doesn’t live there now.”
Micah nodded.
Then returned to blocks.
No crisis.
Children sometimes moved ahead while adults were still organizing the past.
Renee told Graham:
“I thought I needed the house to feel different.”
“And?”
“I needed me to feel different.”
He understood.
The mansion had been dangerous because Harold controlled it.
Now he did not.

The space changed because the power changed.
The same was true of the family.
