Chapter 15 - The Family Turns

News of Margaret’s arrest spread across Colorado.
The story became impossible to contain.
Prominent businesswoman accused of pushing granddaughter from cliff.
Fraud investigation linked to family company.
Forged land deal.
Missing millions.
Mercer Ridge Adventures temporarily closed several operations while the board conducted an independent audit.
Employees were frightened.
Investors called.
Partners demanded explanations.
Grant spent mornings with Hailey and afternoons saving a company his mother had quietly hollowed out.
Owen Price returned to Colorado.
When Grant saw him for the first time in eleven years, neither man knew how to begin.
Owen was forty-five now.
Gray at his temples.
More tired than Grant remembered.
“I’m sorry,” Grant said.
Owen nodded.
“I know.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
Grant appreciated the honesty.
“I told people you were a thief.”
“Yes.”
“I cost you jobs.”
“Yes.”
“I believed her instead of you.”
Owen looked through the office window toward Mercer Ridge.
“You were my best friend.”
Grant swallowed.
“I know.”
“That was the worst part.”
They stood in silence.
Then Owen handed him a flash drive.
“What’s this?”
“Records I kept.”
Grant looked up.
“You saved them?”
“For eleven years.”
The drive contained emails, account screenshots and internal reports Owen had collected before leaving.
One email was from Margaret.
It instructed Owen to approve a transfer.
Hours later she wrote another message claiming she had never authorized it.
The contradiction helped prove she manufactured the theft case.
More importantly, Owen had saved an attachment showing Silver Pine Holdings receiving funds years earlier than investigators knew.
The fraud timeline expanded.
Thomas reviewed everything.
“Why didn’t you send this to me?”
Owen looked at him.
“I tried.”
Thomas frowned.
“When?”
“Three times.”
“I never received anything.”
Owen showed him delivery confirmations.
The emails went to Thomas’s old company account.
Margaret had administrator access.
She had deleted them.
Thomas sat down.
Another opportunity to learn the truth.
Another one Margaret removed.
Owen looked at Grant.
“I’m not coming back to Mercer Ridge.”
Grant had hoped he might.
“I understand.”
“But I’ll testify.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m not doing it for you.”
Grant nodded.
“For Hailey.”
Owen’s voice softened.
“For the kid who survived what the rest of us didn’t see coming.”
Meanwhile, Raymond signed a cooperation agreement in the financial case.
Caleb continued providing records.
Margaret’s network began turning against her.
For years she controlled people through secrets.
Once those secrets became evidence, her leverage disappeared.
Even her longtime accountant handed over archived files.
The more people spoke, the smaller Margaret’s world became.
But she still had one weapon.
Grant’s loyalty.
Her attorney requested a private jail visit with her son.
Grant refused.
Then Margaret wrote him a letter.
My dearest Grant,
I know you hate me right now.
But before you decide I am a monster, ask yourself who built the life you enjoy.
Who protected you when your father cared more about the company?
Who made sure Owen could never take your place?
Who defended you from Elise when she tried to separate you from your family?
Grant stopped reading.
Elise watched him.
“She still blames me.”
Grant handed her the letter.
Elise read silently.
Near the end, Margaret wrote:
Everything I did was to keep Mercer Ridge where it belonged.
With us.
Not with outsiders.
Not with weak people.
Not with a child who could destroy decades of sacrifice because she saw something she did not understand.
Elise looked up.
“She just admitted it.”
“Not legally.”
“But morally.”
Grant stared at the paper.
Margaret continued:
Hailey is alive.
That matters.
I made one terrible decision in a moment of panic.
Do not let your father turn that mistake into a story where I never loved you.
Grant folded the letter.
Then unfolded it.
He read the final sentence.
Come see me alone, and I will tell you the one thing Thomas has hidden from you your entire life.
Grant almost laughed.
Another secret.
Another wedge.
Elise touched his arm.
“Are you going?”
“No.”
He took the letter to Rebecca.
Then he did something Margaret never expected.
He allowed prosecutors to copy it.
Because Grant had finally learned the rule that had saved Hailey.

When Margaret offered a secret, the safest response was no longer to protect the family from it.
It was to put the truth in the light.
