Chapter 6 - The Backup

The transfer failed.
That was the first piece of good news.
The bank’s fraud system automatically paused the $6.2 million transaction because the destination account was newly added and located outside the United States.
Thomas stood in the hospital corridor when Rebecca called.
“The funds are temporarily blocked.”
“How long?”
“Forty-eight hours unless we obtain a court order.”
“Do it.”
“I’m already preparing the emergency filing.”
Thomas looked through the glass at Hailey sleeping.
“Rebecca?”
“Yes?”
“Find everything.”
There was silence.
“Everything Margaret touched.”
Thomas had spent half his life trusting her.
Now he wanted the history of his marriage audited like a crime scene.
By morning, Hailey’s room filled with sunlight.
She ate half a piece of toast.
Grant sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Hailey looked at him.
“For what?”
“For not answering you immediately.”
She knew what he meant.
“Dad…”
“You asked if I believed you.”
Grant swallowed.
“And I should have said yes before you finished asking.”
Hailey stared at the blanket.
“I thought you’d think Grandma was nicer than me.”
Grant’s face broke.
“No.”
“She always says I’m dramatic.”
“That doesn’t matter.”
“She says Mom makes me sensitive.”
Grant looked toward Elise.
For years Margaret had made small remarks about Elise.
Too protective.
Too emotional.
Too controlling.
Grant had dismissed them as personality conflicts.
Now he wondered how much of his marriage his mother had quietly poisoned.
“I should have seen more,” he said.
Hailey looked at him.
“You see me now.”
The words hurt more than any accusation.
Grant nodded.
“I do.”
Thomas entered holding a laptop.
“Hailey.”
She smiled weakly.
“Grandpa.”
“Your mother told me about your documentary camera.”
Hailey’s eyes widened.
“Did they find it?”
“Not yet.”
Her smile disappeared.
Thomas sat.
“But I remembered something.”
He opened the laptop.
“Last week, when we set up your helmet camera, what did we do?”
Hailey thought.
“Cloud backup.”
“What about the small camera?”
She frowned.
“I don’t know.”
“You used my computer to transfer videos two days ago.”
Hailey sat straighter.
Thomas opened a folder labeled HAILEY’S RIDGE MOVIE.
Several files appeared.
Hailey gasped.
“Those are mine!”
Thomas clicked the most recent.
A shaky image of the lodge kitchen appeared.
Hailey’s voice narrated dramatically.
“Day seventeen of my secret investigation…”
Grant almost laughed.
Almost.
Thomas scrolled.
The final file was timestamped the morning of the cliff incident.
Duration: fifty-three minutes.
No one breathed.
“Is that it?” Elise asked.
“I don’t know.”
Thomas clicked.
The screen showed Hailey’s bedroom.
The camera had apparently been recording while she packed.
Then the car.
Margaret’s voice.
“Don’t forget the parachute.”
Hailey’s cheerful answer came from offscreen.
“I look ridiculous.”
“You look adventurous.”
Thomas skipped forward.
The mountain appeared.
Margaret walked ahead.
Hailey positioned the camera on a small tripod.
The angle showed the cliff.
Grant stood.
“Oh my God.”
Thomas continued.
Hailey and Margaret entered frame.
Everything was there.
The trembling.
The pleading.
Margaret’s false reassurance.
“Your parents and your grandfather… they’ll all be so proud of you.”
Hailey backed away.
“No… I can’t do it! I’m too scared!”
Then Margaret changed.
Even on video, the transformation was terrifying.
“If you don’t jump on your own…”
She stepped behind Hailey.
“…I’ll push you.”
Elise covered her mouth.
Grant whispered, “Mom…”
Then came Hailey’s words.
“I’ll tell Grandpa what I saw in his office.”
Margaret froze.
“What did you say?”
“The papers you put in Grandpa’s drawer. And the way you practiced his signature.”
Thomas gripped the table.
Margaret seized Hailey’s harness.
“You should have kept your mouth shut.”
Then she pushed.
Grant turned away before Hailey disappeared.
Elise sobbed.
Thomas remained completely still.
The camera continued recording.
Margaret walked to the edge.
Looked down.
And smiled.
Hailey, watching from the hospital bed, began shaking.
Elise immediately closed the laptop.
“That’s enough.”
“No,” Hailey whispered.
Thomas looked at her.
“What?”
Hailey pointed at the computer.
“There’s more.”
Grant frowned.
“How do you know?”
“Because Grandma talked after.”
Thomas slowly reopened the laptop.
The recording continued.
Margaret walked toward Hailey’s backpack.
She stopped beside the camera.
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
A male voice was faintly audible.
Margaret said:
“It’s done.”
The room went silent.
Then she listened.
“No, she didn’t jump.”
Another pause.
“I had to push her.”
Grant’s face drained of color.
Margaret looked back toward the cliff.
“Get the documents ready. Thomas will be too broken to fight us now.”
Thomas stared at the screen.
Then Margaret said the name.
“Caleb.”
Detective Alvarez, standing near the door, immediately reached for her phone.
They no longer had a suspicious accident.
They had video evidence.
A confession.
And a second participant.
But the recording was not finished.
Margaret spoke one more sentence.
A sentence that made Thomas sit down.
“And after tomorrow, Grant never needs to know what we did to his company.”
Grant stared at his father.
“My company?”
Thomas looked at him.
“What did she do?”
Neither of them knew yet.
May you like
But for the first time, the cliff no longer seemed like the beginning of Margaret’s crime.
It seemed like the moment an older crime had almost been buried forever.
