Chapter 13 - The Missing RecordingClaire’s audio recorder contained a gap.

File 07.
File 08.
Then File 10.
No File 09.
Forensics confirmed a file had once existed and been deleted.
Not recently.
Years earlier.
Rachel remembered something.
“Claire backed up everything.”
“Where?” Collins asked.
“She used an external drive.”
“Do you have it?”
“No.”
“Havenridge?”
“Maybe.”
They searched again.
Nothing.
Then Harper remembered the photograph she had carried from Gregory’s house.
Claire at the county fair.
Harper.
Lily.
Behind them, Rachel stood beside a stroller.
Harper pulled the photo from her backpack.
On the back Claire had written:
FOR THE GIRLS — IF YOU EVER NEED THE TRUTH, START WHERE WE KEPT CHRISTMAS.
Rachel stared.
“Christmas?”
“Havenridge?”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“The attic.”
Claire’s mother stored holiday decorations in an attic room.
Police accompanied them back.
Boxes filled the space.
Artificial wreaths.
Lights.
Ornaments.
Lily found the first clue.
A wooden angel with a hollow base.
Inside was a USB drive.
File 09 existed there.
The recording began with Claire’s voice.
“October 17. Brandon requested another meeting at Havenridge.”
Harper’s heart pounded.
Male voices entered.
Brandon.
Gregory.
Victor Shaw.
The meeting had occurred nearly two years before Claire died.
Brandon spoke first.
“Morrow will clear the Northstar lien as part of closing.”
Claire answered, “The lien is fraudulent.”
Victor said, “It still clouds title.”
“Because he forged my signature.”
Brandon replied, “Keep your voice down.”
“This is my house.”
Gregory tried to intervene.
“Claire, take the deal.”
“No.”
Victor offered numbers.
Five million.
Then six.
Claire refused.
“You’re not buying Havenridge. You’re buying access to every parcel behind it.”
Silence.
Victor eventually said:
“You’re making this difficult.”
Claire laughed.
“No. Ownership is making this difficult.”
Then Brandon’s voice became low.
“If you keep blocking this, I will reopen custody.”
Harper closed her eyes.
Claire answered:
“You haven’t seen Harper in almost a year.”
“I’m still her father.”
“You use that word only when you need leverage.”
Gregory said, “Brandon, stop.”
But Brandon continued.
“I’ll argue parental alienation.”
Claire’s voice remained steady.
“I have your threats documented.”
Victor cut in.
“This conversation is becoming unproductive.”
Then came the line that changed everything.
Gregory said:
“Claire, you don’t understand how much money Morrow has already advanced.”
Claire replied:
“To whom?”
No one answered.
“To whom, Gregory?”
Gregory finally said, “All of us.”
The recording stopped.
Rachel stared at Collins.
“All of us?”
Investigators examined old financial records.
Morrow had advanced $2.4 million connected to the Havenridge development plan.
Brandon received $1.1 million through companies.
Gregory received $310,000.
Victor’s side entities received the rest.
Most of the money was gone.
If Claire refused to sell, Morrow faced losses.
Brandon and Gregory faced lawsuits.
The fraudulent lien threatened criminal exposure.
Harper finally saw why every adult kept talking about ownership, custody, and evidence as though they were the same thing.
Because to these men, they were.
Children created custody rights.
Custody created leverage.
Leverage created access.
Access created money.
Claire had refused to let the chain close.
That was why they hated her.
Naomi asked Harper gently, “How are you feeling?”
Harper stared at the recorder.
“Like Mom was fighting everybody.”
Rachel began crying.
“Yes.”
“Alone?”
“Too often.”
Harper looked at her aunt.
“Like me with Lily.”
Rachel swallowed.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt.
But it also made something clear.
Claire’s warning had not been poetic.
Do not let Harper think she has to protect Lily alone.
She had been trying to break the pattern before Harper inherited it.
The next day Victor Shaw was arrested on financial-fraud charges unrelated to the girls.
Brandon’s lawyer withdrew from representing him in the trust case, citing a conflict.
Gregory’s attorney contacted prosecutors.
Gregory wanted a deal.

In exchange, he offered testimony about Brandon.
And about what happened after Claire discovered the missing $2.4 million.
