Chapter 14 - What Gregory AdmittedGregory’s proffer lasted four hours.

Harper was not present.

Naomi later told her only the parts she needed to know.

Gregory admitted abusing Harper and Lily.

He admitted sending them out to bring home cash.

He admitted accepting money from Brandon to cooperate with custody.

He admitted taking money from Morrow.

He admitted participating in the forged Northstar loan years earlier.

He did not ask anyone to call those things mistakes.

At least not during the proffer.

“He says Brandon knew conditions at Gregory’s house were getting worse,” Naomi explained.

“Did Dad tell him to hurt us?”

“No evidence of that.”

Harper felt both relieved and angry.

She had wanted a clean answer.

One villain ordering another.

Reality was uglier.

Gregory had chosen cruelty.

Brandon had chosen to watch because it helped him.

Two separate choices had met in the same room.

“What else did Gregory say?”

Rachel hesitated.

“After your mother discovered the Morrow advances, she threatened to report everything.”

Harper nodded.

“Then?”

“Brandon pressured her to sell Havenridge.”

“We know that.”

“Gregory says Brandon also threatened to expose Gregory’s gambling debts and fraud unless Gregory convinced Claire.”

Harper frowned.

“So Gregory helped Mom and hurt Mom?”

“Yes.”

People were harder when they were not pure monsters.

Gregory had sometimes defended Claire from Brandon.

Then betrayed her.

He had cared for Claire during her illness.

Then abused her daughters after she died.

He had loved the girls once.

Then turned them into income.

Harper hated him.

But she hated the old memories too because some of them were good.

“What happens to him?”

“He will plead guilty to multiple charges if the judge accepts the agreement.”

“Will he go to prison?”

“Likely.”

Lily, playing nearby, looked up.

“Good.”

Harper looked at her.

Lily did not seem angry.

Only certain.

Gregory gave investigators another piece of evidence.

A storage-unit key.

The unit belonged to a shell company Brandon had abandoned years ago.

Inside were Northstar records.

Old computers.

Boxes from Claire and Brandon’s marriage.

And a locked metal cabinet.

Police obtained a warrant.

Inside the cabinet were copies of Claire’s medical insurance files, custody documents, and correspondence.

One folder was labeled H.

Harper.

Inside were private reports from an investigator Brandon had hired over years.

School schedules.

Photographs.

Teachers’ names.

Addresses.

Gregory’s home.

Havenridge.

Rachel stared at Detective Collins.

“He was monitoring Harper before Claire died?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“At least seven years.”

Harper felt violated in a way she could not name.

Pictures of herself at playgrounds.

Outside school.

At Claire’s funeral.

Brandon had been watching from a distance.

Not parenting.

Watching.

Another folder was labeled L.

Lily.

The surveillance began after Claire died.

“Why?” Harper asked.

Collins answered carefully.

“Brandon may say he was monitoring your safety.”

“But he didn’t help.”

“No.”

That was the answer that mattered.

The final box contained an old laptop.

Forensics recovered deleted emails between Brandon and Victor Shaw.

One, sent three weeks after Claire’s funeral, read:

GREGORY HAS GUARDIANSHIP. LEAVE IT FOR NOW. HIS FINANCES WILL BREAK HIM EVENTUALLY.

Victor replied:

AND THEN?

Brandon:

THEN I STEP IN.

Harper read it twice.

Gregory’s collapse had not surprised Brandon.

He had predicted it.

Maybe even depended on it.

Another email:

IF H IS OLD ENOUGH TO TALK?

Brandon:

CHILDREN ADAPT TO WHATEVER STORY KEEPS THEM SAFE.

Harper’s stomach turned.

Brandon had misunderstood her completely.

He thought survival made children obedient.

Instead, every lie had made Harper listen harder.

Detective Collins closed the laptop.

“This gives prosecutors strong evidence of planning around the custody case.”

“For taking our money?”

“For fraud, witness manipulation, and potentially conspiracy depending on what further evidence shows.”

Harper looked at Rachel.

“What if he says he loves us?”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Then love has to answer for what it did.”

That night Harper dreamed of the corner in Gregory’s house.

But something was different.

In the dream, she was shielding Lily.

Then Claire opened the door.

Not Brandon.

Claire did not pull Harper away.

She simply said:

You can move now.

Harper woke crying.

Lily stirred.

“Bad dream?”

“Yeah.”

Lily reached for her hand.

Harper almost wrapped herself around her.

May you like

Instead, she let Lily hold her.

For once, she did not become the wall.
