DON’T TOUCH GRANDMA / Chapter 8 / 25

Chapter 8 - THE BRUISE BENEATH HER SLEEVEThe recording continued.

Ruth’s voice sounded weak.

“You stole from the trust.”

“I borrowed money.”

“You moved it into your company.”

“It will return after the property sale.”

“This house is not being sold.”

“That is no longer your decision.”

Paper moved.

A pen clicked.

Then Ruth said, “You drugged me.”

Helena answered, “I helped you stop fighting.”

Nathan turned away from the technician.

Oliver stood near the hospital window.

“Is that enough?”

“It is important,” Naomi said.

“Will Mom go to jail?”

“We have to investigate all of it.”

Oliver’s face fell.

Children expected truth to produce immediate consequences.

Adults knew systems moved slowly.

The second recording captured Helena gripping Ruth.

Oliver shouted.

The wheelchair struck the fireplace step.

Then the front door opened.

Nathan’s arrival could be heard clearly.

The file ended before Helena produced the documents.

The audio transformed a disputed scene into evidence.

But Helena’s attorney challenged it.

He claimed Oliver deliberately recorded private conversations and could have edited the files.

The technician confirmed the app created them automatically.

Metadata showed no editing.

The court would decide admissibility.

Meanwhile, doctors photographed Ruth’s injuries.

A bruise beneath her sleeve matched the size and position of Helena’s fingers.

Older marks appeared along both forearms.

Ruth explained some came from ordinary medical procedures.

Others came from Helena restraining her.

“When?” Naomi asked.

“Whenever I refused medication.”

“Did she ever strike you?”

“No.”

The answer mattered.

Ruth did not add violence that had not occurred.

“She did not need to strike me. She controlled my chair, telephone, food and medicine.”

“What did she tell you would happen if you refused?”

“That Nathan would put me in a facility.”

Nathan sat beside her.

“I never said that.”

“I know now.”

“What else?”

“She said Oliver would be sent to boarding school because I made him disrespectful.”

Oliver looked at Helena’s empty place near the door.

She had controlled all three family members by threatening separation.

At the mansion, police found Ruth’s telephone in Helena’s locked office.

The call history had been erased.

Cloud records showed ninety-three attempted calls to Nathan over four months.

None reached him because Helena blocked them through the family account.

They also found drafts of letters written in Ruth’s name.

One requested residential placement.

Another accused Oliver of aggression.

A third praised Helena’s caregiving.

The language was almost identical to Helena’s public statement.

Nathan examined the files.

“She was building a history.”

Naomi agreed.

“Documents created over time appear more credible than a sudden accusation.”

“She planned this for months.”

“Possibly longer.”

The trust audit began.

Over eight months, more than six hundred thousand dollars had moved into a company called H.G. Legacy Management.

H.G.

Helena Grant.

The company owned no office, employees or investments.

Most of the money disappeared into foreign accounts.

One recent payment went to a private residential facility in Vermont.

The reservation was for Ruth.

Arrival date: Friday.

Helena planned to move her in two days.

A second reservation existed at a nearby therapeutic school.

It was for Oliver.
