Chapter 11 - The Camera Nora HidDetective Ortiz insisted on making a forensic copy before anyone watched.

Clayton hated waiting.

But Nora’s voice lived in his head.

Find facts.

So he waited.

At 4:03 p.m., Ortiz returned.

“Copy preserved.”

Clayton sat.

Agnes was not invited.

Neither was Beckett.

Julian remained as counsel.

Miles opened the first file.

9:12 p.m.

Rear hallway.

Empty.

Sound from kitchen.

Nora:

“You don’t get to decide whether my children belong here.”

Warren:

“I’m trying to save my brother from humiliation.”

Nora:

“You’re trying to steal from him.”

Agnes:

“Lower your voice.”

The hallway remained empty.

9:14.

A shadow.

Camera feed blinked.

This local card continued even though the main system went dark.

That was Nora’s backup.

9:18.

Nora entered the hallway holding the blue folder.

Warren followed.

Agnes behind him.

All three visible.

Clayton’s heartbeat hammered.

Nora turned.

“Do not follow me upstairs.”

Warren:

“Give me the folder.”

“No.”

“I’m asking once.”

Nora laughed.

“You fabricated DNA results about children.”

Warren stepped closer.

“I didn’t fabricate anything.”

“I have the template from your office.”

His face changed.

There.

Fear.

Nora continued.

“I have Armitage.”

Warren looked toward Agnes.

“She’s lying.”

Nora turned to Agnes.

“He has stolen nearly nine hundred thousand dollars from you.”

Agnes stared at Warren.

“What?”

Warren:

“She’s twisting transfers.”

Nora:

“Ask him for statements.”

Agnes looked shaken.

For one moment, Clayton saw the point where everything could have changed.

His mother could have stopped.

Could have believed evidence.

Could have told Warren to leave.

Instead:

“Why are you doing this tonight?”

Nora stared.

“What?”

“Clayton is away.”

Nora laughed in disbelief.

“Because Warren came here.”

Warren said:

“She called me.”

Nora looked at Agnes.

The betrayal hit her face.

“You called him?”

Agnes looked away.

Nora whispered:

“Of course you did.”

Then she turned toward the stairs.

Warren grabbed her wrist.

Clayton stopped breathing.

Nora jerked away.

“Don’t touch me.”

The exact words Agnes remembered.

Warren:

“Give me the folder.”

Nora pulled free.

“Get out of my house.”

His face twisted.

“Your house?”

“Yes.”

“My grandfather paid for half of it.”

“Then sue me.”

Even Julian almost reacted.

Nora moved toward the stairs.

Agnes said:

“Warren, leave.”

Finally.

He ignored her.

9:20.

Nora started upstairs.

Warren followed two steps behind.

Then—

The camera angle lost them.

Clayton’s pulse exploded.

The rear hall camera covered the bottom landing, not the upper flight.

Voices continued.

Nora:

“Stop following me.”

Warren:

“You’re not giving Clayton that folder.”

Nora:

“Try stopping me.”

A thud.

Not the fall.

Something smaller.

Agnes shouted:

“Warren!”

Then footsteps.

The file ended.

Clayton stared.

“Next.”

9:24.

Empty hall.

No one.

Voices upstairs.

Too muffled.

9:29.

Nora appeared briefly at the top edge of frame.

Only legs visible.

Then Warren.

Agnes somewhere behind.

Nora shouted:

“You are done using this family.”

Warren:

“You think Clayton chooses you over us?”

Nora:

“This isn’t about choosing!”

Then:

“It’s about what you did.”

Warren’s voice became lower.

“You have no idea what I can lose.”

Nora answered:

“Then you should have thought about that before you stole it.”

The file cut.

Clayton’s hands shook.

“Next.”

9:32.

The camera activated on motion.

Nora came into partial view near the top landing.

Warren close behind.

She held the folder against her chest.

He reached.

She twisted away.

Agnes appeared farther back.

“Stop!”

Warren caught the folder.

Nora held on.

They struggled.

Not violent at first.

Paper tug-of-war.

Then Warren pulled harder.

Nora stepped backward.

Her foot slipped near the top step.

Clayton stopped breathing.

Warren released the folder.

Nora regained balance.

For one second.

Safe.

Then she slapped Warren.

Hard.

His head turned.

Silence.

Nora said:

“Get out.”

Warren looked at her.

Something changed.

Humiliation.

Rage.

He stepped forward.

Agnes shouted:

“Warren, don’t.”

He shoved Nora.

Both hands.

Not accidental.

Not a grab.

A shove.

Nora disappeared from the top of frame.

A terrible series of sounds followed.

Then she landed at the bottom.

Motionless.

Clayton could not breathe.

Julian looked away.

Miles covered his mouth.

Ortiz remained focused.

Agnes screamed.

“OH MY GOD!”

She ran down.

Warren stood above.

Frozen.

Then:

“I didn’t mean—”

Agnes:

“Call 911!”

Warren didn’t move.

“CALL!”

He came down halfway.

Saw the blue folder on the stairs.

Picked it up.

Agnes shouted:

“What are you doing?!”

Warren:

“She was going to destroy everything.”

Clayton’s eyes filled with tears.

Agnes:

“She’s hurt!”

Warren:

“If she wakes up, she’ll say I pushed her.”

Agnes looked at him.

“That’s because you did!”

There it was.

The truth.

Recorded.

Warren stared at his mother.

Then said:

“You want Clayton to lose his brother too?”

Agnes froze.

Warren continued.

“You want the company destroyed?”

“Shut up.”

“You want everyone to know those children aren’t his?”

Nora lay unconscious three feet away while Warren rebuilt his lie.

Agnes sobbed.

“Just call.”

“I will.”

He stepped closer.

“But you need to think.”

The video ended.

The next file showed Agnes calling 911.

Warren moving through the pantry.

Security panel.

Then the blue folder disappearing beneath his coat.

Clayton stood abruptly.

He couldn’t stay seated.

He walked to the window.

The room blurred.

Nora had not slipped.

There had been no ambiguous struggle.

Warren shoved her after she was safe.

His brother killed his wife because she refused to stay silent.

Ortiz spoke carefully.

“Clayton.”

He didn’t turn.

“We have preserved the video.”

He nodded.

“We’ll move quickly.”

“Do it.”

“You should not contact Warren.”

Clayton laughed once.

“I don’t want to hear his voice.”

But his phone rang.

Warren.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Ortiz said:

“Don’t answer.”

Clayton stared at the name.

Then a message arrived.

I know you found Nora’s backup.

Clayton’s blood went cold.

How?

Only a handful of people knew.

Another message:

Before you decide Mom is innocent, ask why she let Nora lie there while I took the folder.

Clayton looked at Ortiz.

“Warren knows.”

She was already calling her team.

Then another message.

And ask her what she did after the ambulance left.

Clayton’s stomach tightened.

Warren had pushed Nora.

That part was proven.

But apparently he still possessed one final weapon.

May you like

Something Agnes had done after Nora was taken away.

Something she had never confessed.
