Chapter 4 - The Word She Wanted to BelieveClayton met Agnes in Julian Voss’s office the next morning.

Not at home.

Not near the children.

Agnes looked older than she had twenty-four hours earlier.

No makeup.

Gray hair pulled back.

Hands folded tightly in her lap.

Clayton sat across from her.

Julian remained beside him.

“Show me the report.”

Agnes took an envelope from her purse.

She pushed it across the table.

Clayton opened it.

Private DNA Services.

Two children listed by initials.

B.M.

M.M.

Alleged father: C.M.

Probability of paternity:

0.0%.

For both.

Clayton stared.

His hands remained steady.

That surprised him.

“Where did you get this?”

“Warren.”

“When?”

“After Maddox was born.”

“Did you ask how he got DNA samples from my children?”

Agnes looked away.

“He said Nora had ordered it.”

Clayton laughed once.

“You believed that?”

“He showed me emails.”

“Where?”

“I don’t have them.”

“Of course.”

Agnes’s face tightened.

“Clayton, Nora had been secretive.”

“She was dying.”

“She wasn’t dying when this started.”

His jaw tightened.

“Do not use her illness to justify this.”

“I’m telling you what I saw.”

“No.”

Clayton leaned forward.

“You’re telling me what you chose to believe.”

Agnes flinched.

Julian said nothing.

Clayton pointed at the report.

“Did you ever call the lab?”

“No.”

“Verify the case number?”

“No.”

“Ask me?”

Agnes looked ashamed.

“No.”

“Ask Nora directly?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That it was fake.”

Clayton stared.

“And you believed Warren.”

“She was defensive.”

“She was accused of having two children with another man.”

Agnes’s eyes filled.

“She had lied before.”

“About what?”

Silence.

Clayton waited.

“Money.”

“What money?”

Agnes rubbed her hands.

“She moved money from an account your father established.”

Clayton frowned.

“My father has been dead eleven years.”

“I know.”

“What account?”

“The Mercer family reserve.”

Julian looked up.

“That wasn’t Nora’s account.”

Agnes turned toward him.

“She had access through Clayton.”

Clayton frowned.

“I never gave her access.”

Julian said:

“Nora did not move money from the family reserve.”

Agnes’s expression changed.

“How do you know?”

“Because I reviewed those accounts after Silas died.”

Clayton looked at him.

“Then who did?”

Julian hesitated.

“Warren had authority over some investment vehicles.”

Agnes went still.

Clayton saw it.

One of Warren’s stories falling apart in real time.

“What exactly did Warren tell you?”

Agnes whispered:

“That Nora discovered the paternity test and tried to buy his silence using family funds.”

Clayton almost smiled from disbelief.

“So in his version, Nora stole money to stop him revealing that both her children weren’t mine.”

“Yes.”

“And you never wondered why she would order the test herself?”

Agnes said nothing.

“Why test Maddox? He had just been born.”

“She may have been afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Exposure.”

Clayton’s voice hardened.

“You wanted her guilty.”

Agnes looked up.

“That isn’t fair.”

“Isn’t it?”

“You loved her.”

“I did.”

“She pushed me out.”

“Nora set boundaries.”

“She made you think I was interfering.”

“You were.”

Agnes’s face flushed.

“After everything I did for you?”

There.

The old wound.

Agnes had raised Clayton alone after his father left.

Worked two jobs.

Helped him through school.

Then Clayton became successful.

Married Nora.

Created a household that did not revolve around his mother.

Agnes called it rejection.

Nora called it adulthood.

“You hated that she could tell you no.”

Agnes whispered:

“She changed you.”

“Good.”

The word surprised both of them.

Clayton continued.

“She taught me that gratitude isn’t lifelong obedience.”

Agnes cried silently.

Then Clayton asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Why did you call Beckett and Maddox bastards?”

She closed her eyes.

“Because I was angry.”

“Not enough.”

“I looked at them and saw her.”

“Still not enough.”

Agnes’s voice broke.

“I thought they were proof.”

“Of what?”

“That she had made a fool of us.”

Us.

Not Clayton.

Us.

Agnes had turned Nora’s supposed betrayal into family humiliation.

Clayton stared.

“Did you ever treat them badly because of that report before yesterday?”

Agnes didn’t answer.

His stomach tightened.

“Mother.”

“I was stricter.”

“How?”

“She needed structure.”

“She?”

“Beckett.”

“What about Maddox?”

“He’s difficult.”

“He is one.”

“He screams whenever I feed him.”

“He’s a baby.”

Agnes started crying harder.

“I didn’t mean to hit him.”

“You did.”

“I lost patience.”

“And then called him a bastard.”

Silence.

Clayton pushed the report toward Julian.

“Can we verify it?”

“Yes.”

“I want new DNA tests today.”

Agnes looked up sharply.

Clayton continued:

“Not because I doubt Nora.”

His voice softened slightly.

“Because Beckett now doubts himself.”

Agnes looked away.

“That is what you did.”

The new samples were collected under independent chain of custody.

Clayton gave his.

Beckett gave his reluctantly.

Maddox cried at the swab and then tried to grab the nurse’s glasses.

Results would be expedited.

Hours, not days.

While waiting, Julian received Nora’s old legal file from archive.

He opened it in front of Clayton.

The first document was a letter dated nine days before her fall.

Nora wrote:

Julian,

Warren has shown Agnes a fabricated paternity report. He is trying to trigger the contingent succession language in Silas’s trust.

Clayton stopped breathing.

Nora knew.

Julian continued reading.

I have independent proof regarding Beckett. Maddox’s confirmation is pending, but there is no biological question. Warren’s motive is financial.

Agnes covered her mouth.

Then:

More importantly, I found transfers from Mercer Holdings into a vendor account Warren controls indirectly.

Clayton’s pulse jumped.

Nora had linked the paternity lie to money.

The letter ended:

I have not told Clayton yet because I want complete evidence, not another family war based on accusation.

If anything happens before I meet him—

Julian stopped.

Clayton looked up.

“Read it.”

Julian’s voice lowered.

If anything happens before I meet him, do not let Warren control the story.

Silence filled the room.

Then Clayton’s phone buzzed.

DNA RESULTS AVAILABLE.

He opened them.

Beckett Mercer:

Probability Clayton Mercer is biological father — greater than 99.99%.

Maddox Mercer:

Greater than 99.99%.

Clayton turned the screen toward Agnes.

Her face collapsed.

The children were his.

Nora had told the truth.

Warren had lied.

And Agnes had punished two children because the lie gave her permission to hate the woman she already resented.

Julian picked up the old report.

“I’m going to contact the lab.”

Clayton looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if this document is fake, Warren may have left a trail.”

Agnes whispered:

“He told me he was protecting you.”

Clayton stood.

“No.”

He looked at his mother.

“He was protecting himself.”

Then Julian’s assistant entered.

“Sorry.”

“What?”

“The security company sent over the metadata you requested.”

Julian took the page.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at Clayton.

“The fake DNA report was created from a template.”

“Whose computer?”

May you like

Julian answered:

“Warren’s office.”
