Chapter 14 - The Backup at 3:17Damian's arrest should have ended it.

It didn't.
Because Raymond's trap remained.
The router automation.
3:17.
Detective Calder's cyber unit pulled the old configuration from a cloud account.
Raymond had written a script into the home security system before death.
Every day at 3:17 p.m., if the primary camera network was manually disconnected, a battery-powered secondary recorder activated for forty-five minutes.
The secondary recorder did not rely on Wi-Fi.
It uploaded later when connection returned.
Destination:
An encrypted cloud folder.
Nobody knew the password.
Except maybe Raymond.
Maribel stared at the login screen.
Hint:
WHAT COMES HOME?
Elodie answered immediately.
“Birds.”
Wrong.
Luke tried:
“Family.”
Wrong.
Maribel laughed sadly.
Raymond loved riddles children could solve better than adults.
The music box.
Birds know how to go home.
Elodie frowned.
“Not birds.”
“What?”
“Grandpa always said pigeons.”
Maribel looked at her.
“Pigeons?”
“He said people make fun of them but they always know how to come home.”
Password:
PIGEON.
Wrong.
Elodie rolled her eyes.
“He hated singular.”
PIGEONS.
Access granted.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Maribel stopped breathing.
Every 3:17 blackout had been recorded from another angle.
A hidden battery camera inside a kitchen smoke detector.
Raymond installed it years earlier.
Constance and Damian never found it.
File one.
Three weeks earlier.
Constance disconnected the router.
She gave Jonah pink medicine.
Then searched Elodie's backpack.
When Elodie entered, Constance grabbed her arm.
“You tell your mother and she'll lose everything.”
Maribel covered her mouth.
File two.
Constance and Damian together.
Damian:
“This has to stop.”
Constance:
“Then find the card.”
“You're scaring her.”
“She knows more than she's saying.”
“You hit her.”
Constance:
“Once.”
Damian:
“You sound like Sloan.”
Maribel noticed.
Damian had resisted some abuse.
Not enough.
But he wasn't identical to Constance.
File three.
Tuesday.
Constance absent.
Damian entered.
Turned off camera.
Searched.
Jonah cried.
Damian found the bottle.
He stared at it for a long time.
Then called someone.
“Mom, I'm not giving him this.”
Pause.
“You said it was children's medicine.”
Pause.
“I don't care.”
He hung up.
Maribel frowned.
Elodie had remembered Damian putting medicine in Jonah's cup.
Video continued.
Damian filled Jonah's cup with juice.
Then—
poured the medicine into the sink.
Maribel stopped.
“What?”
Elodie looked confused.
“I thought he put it in.”
Damian hadn't.
So Jonah's antihistamine level that day came from earlier exposure.
Constance.
Or someone else.
File continued.
Damian searched the room.
Then Jonah cried harder.
Damian picked him up.
Awkward.
But gentle.
“Your grandma is going to get all of us arrested.”
He bounced him.
“You got your dad's lungs.”
Maribel almost laughed through tears.
Then another person entered.
Everett Sloan.
Nobody had known.
Sloan said,
“You found it?”
“No.”
“Then move.”
Damian:
“Why are you here?”
Sloan:
“Because you waste time feeling guilty.”
Damian's expression hardened.
“What did you do to Dad?”
Sloan stopped.
There.
Damian had still doubted.
Sloan said,
“Don't start.”
“I asked you.”
“You were there.”
“I saw him fall.”
“You chose not to call.”
Damian:
“Because you said—”
“I didn't hold your hand.”
Damian looked sick.
Sloan searched the kitchen.
Then walked directly toward the camera wall.
Maribel stopped breathing.
Did he know?
He touched the mounted security camera.
But didn't remove it.
“Raymond always hid things near what people thought they understood.”
He smiled faintly.
Then left.
Damian stared after him.
The file ended.
Another blackout.
The day before Constance slapped Jonah.
This time Sloan entered alone.
Constance was supposedly grocery shopping.
Sloan disconnected Wi-Fi.
He searched the camera.
Removed it.
But the card had already been found by police later.
What was Sloan looking for now?
He moved to the pantry.
Opened cereal boxes.
Found Constance's prepaid phone.
Read messages.
Then typed something.
He wasn't helping them.
He was monitoring them.
Using them.
Then he did something disturbing.
He took the pink medicine bottle from Constance's bag.
Photographed it.
Put it back.
Sloan knew she was drugging Jonah.
And said nothing.
Because the abuse gave him leverage over her.
Maribel felt sick.
The final backup file was from yesterday.
After Constance's arrest.
After Damian disappeared.
Sloan entered the empty house using a master key.
He went to the kitchen.
Looked directly into the hidden battery camera.
Smiled.
And said,
“I know you're there, Raymond.”
Maribel's skin went cold.
Sloan knew about the backup.
He had known for years.
Then he held up a blue folder.
“The originals are still mine.”
He opened it.
Inside was a document.
Raymond's trust.
But not the version police recovered.
Another one.
Sloan said,
“When Maribel learns what her father really did, she'll wish you'd let the family keep lying.”
The file ended.
Luke looked at Maribel.
“What could be worse?”
She didn't know.
Then Detective Calder received a call from the station.
Everett Sloan was gone.
Released?
No.
He had never been formally arrested.
Only questioned.
His attorney secured his departure before the new backup footage was reviewed.
Now his office was empty.
Car abandoned.
Phone off.
And the blue folder was missing with him.

The man who had convinced Constance and Damian not to save Raymond was now the only person still free.
And apparently Raymond's trust hid one final secret.
