Chapter 7 - Behind the CameraLuke brought a ladder.

Detective Calder brought a warrant technician.

Maribel brought anger.

The camera came off the wall.

Behind the mounting plate was a narrow cavity.

Inside sat a plastic sleeve no larger than a credit card.

Elodie stood in the doorway holding Maribel's hand.

The technician removed it with gloves.

A microSD card.

No one spoke.

Raymond had hidden evidence behind the very camera Constance and Damian kept disabling.

Maribel almost laughed from the cruelty of it.

Her father knew.

Maybe not what would happen later.

But he knew enough to hide something where people might overlook it.

The card contained folders.

Bank records.

Audio.

Photographs.

A document titled:

IF THEY TELL YOU I FELL.

Maribel stopped breathing.

Luke touched her shoulder.

“You don't have to read this now.”

“Yes.”

She opened it.

Raymond's words filled the screen.

Constance and Damian have been moving money from accounts connected to the grandchildren trust before I formally funded it. Everett Sloan helped create the entities. I confronted Damian. He denied it. I confronted Constance. She told me family money belongs to family.

Maribel's throat tightened.

That sounded exactly like her mother.

I have changed the trust structure. Mari will control it. Damian will have no independent authority unless Mari signs one.

Maribel closed her eyes.

She had signed one after he died.

They had waited until grief made her easy.

Raymond continued.

If I die unexpectedly, do not assume Constance tells you everything.

Luke swore under his breath.

Then came audio.

Date:

Four days before Raymond died.

Constance's voice.

“You're humiliating Damian.”

Raymond:

“He stole.”

“He borrowed.”

“From his niece.”

“You were going to give him money someday anyway.”

“That is not your decision.”

Damian entered the recording.

“Dad, calm down.”

Raymond:

“Don't call me Dad when you're stealing from my granddaughter.”

Maribel covered her mouth.

Damian was Raymond's stepson, but Raymond had raised him since age nine.

Loved him as a son.

Damian replied,

“I can put it back.”

“When?”

Silence.

Raymond:

“You can't.”

Constance:

“We can handle this privately.”

“No.”

“Raymond.”

“I am removing Damian from every account Monday.”

The recording ended.

Raymond died Sunday night.

Maribel stared.

Calder's face had changed.

This wasn't a family dispute anymore.

It was motive.

The next audio file was Sunday.

Timestamp 8:42 p.m.

Muffled.

Raymond's study.

Everett Sloan:

“You should reconsider.”

Raymond:

“You're trespassing.”

Sloan:

“Constance invited me.”

Raymond:

“Then Constance can leave too.”

A door slammed.

The audio ended.

Another file at 9:07.

Damian:

“Where is the card?”

Raymond laughed.

“So that's why you're here.”

Damian:

“Dad.”

“Don't.”

Constance:

“Just give it to us.”

“No.”

“Raymond, please.”

“You're asking me to help you steal from children.”

“We made mistakes.”

“You built a system.”

The recording crackled.

Then Raymond said something that made Maribel's heart stop.

“I already sent Mari enough to destroy all of you.”

Constance screamed,

“You did what?”

A crash.

The audio ended.

No scream.

No clear fall.

Just noise.

Maribel looked at Calder.

“That was the night he died.”

“Yes.”

“What time did Mom call 911?”

Calder checked the old report.

9:31 p.m.

Twenty-four minutes later.

Maribel felt sick.

“What happened in those twenty-four minutes?”

Nobody knew.

Another file existed.

Video.

Low resolution.

Apparently recorded by a small battery camera Raymond had placed in the study.

They opened it.

Raymond stood near the desk.

Constance.

Damian.

Sloan.

All three were there.

The argument from the audio played.

Then Raymond walked toward the door.

Camera angle didn't show the hallway.

Constance followed.

Damian followed.

Sloan remained.

Seconds later—

a crash.

Sloan flinched.

He didn't move.

Then Damian rushed back into frame.

Face white.

“He fell.”

Sloan asked,

“Is he breathing?”

Damian didn't answer.

Constance entered.

She looked terrified.

“We call an ambulance.”

Sloan grabbed her arm.

“No.”

Maribel stopped breathing.

On video, Constance stared at him.

“What?”

Sloan said,

“If he wakes up, all three of you go to prison.”

Damian whispered,

“Everett.”

Sloan continued.

“You have maybe five minutes to decide whether tonight was an accident.”

The video ended.

Not because the recording stopped naturally.

Someone deleted the rest.

But Raymond's hidden card had preserved enough.

Maribel sat back.

Her father might have survived the fall.

Constance wanted to call.

Sloan stopped her.

What did Damian do?

Then Elodie spoke from the doorway.

“Mom.”

Maribel turned.

Elodie was crying.

“I know where Grandpa's key is.”

“The music-box key?”

She nodded.

“Grandma took it.”

“When?”

“Before Grandpa died.”

Maribel stared.

“Why?”

“Because Grandpa told her the card would show who let him die.”

Silence.

Elodie covered her mouth.

“I heard them fighting about it.”

Maribel's skin went cold.

Not two years ago.

Recently.

Which meant Constance knew the card still existed.

And had been searching for it long before she started abusing Jonah in front of a supposedly dead camera.
