Chapter 18 - EVELYN FINALLY SAYS NOBlake stayed another twenty minutes.

No argument.

No bargaining.

When he left, Evelyn cried.

Not because she regretted saying no.

Because saying no to someone you loved did not automatically feel empowering.

Sometimes it felt terrible.

Harrison found her later at the kitchen table.

“You saw him.”

“Yes.”

“How’d it go?”

“I hurt him.”

Harrison sat.

“No.”

“I did.”

“You disappointed him.”

“There’s a difference?”

“Yes.”

He reached across the table.

“Hurt is what happens when you push someone into a wall.”

She gave him a tired look.

“You’re not subtle.”

“I’ve never claimed to be.”

For the first time in weeks, Evelyn laughed.

Small.

But real.

Harrison smiled.

“There she is.”

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Make this sweet.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m still angry.”

“You’re allowed.”

“I hate being angry at him.”

“I know.”

She looked at their joined hands.

“What if he changes?”

“Then we notice.”

“What if he doesn’t?”

“Then we notice that too.”

Evelyn breathed out.

“That’s very clinical.”

“It’s accurate.”

Over the following months, Blake did something unexpected.

He worked.

Not theatrically.

Not trying to impress Harrison.

He simply did his job.

His North Carolina redevelopment project faced a zoning crisis.

Instead of calling his father, Blake handled it.

When a younger executive disagreed with him in a meeting, Blake listened rather than cutting him off.

When a proposal failed, he did not blame the team.

People noticed.

Harrison noticed.

He said nothing.

At home, the marriage deteriorated.

Sloane wanted action.

A public reconciliation.

Family photographs.

Thanksgiving invitations.

Anything that restored appearances.

Blake refused to pressure Evelyn again.

“You don’t get to set her timeline.”

“Our marriage is becoming collateral damage.”

“Our marriage caused some of the damage.”

“Your mother is punishing us.”

“No.”

Blake’s answer came faster now.

“She’s avoiding us.”

“What’s the difference?”

“One is about us. One is about her.”

Sloane stared.

May you like

“You sound like your father.”

For the first time, Blake did not take it as an insult.
