Chapter 21 - THE THING BLAKE NEVER EXPECTED TO LOSEBlake had expected losing the shares to hurt.

It did.

He had not expected Sunday dinner.

For most of his life, Sunday dinner at his parents’ home happened almost automatically.

Even during college, if he was home, he attended.

When work became demanding, Evelyn scheduled around him.

When Sloane disliked the tradition, Blake came less often.

After the wedding, invitations stopped.

Not pointedly.

No dramatic announcement.

They simply stopped.

He drove past the estate one Sunday evening and saw lights in the dining room.

Harrison.

Evelyn.

Two family friends.

No Blake.

The sight hurt more than any canceled board meeting.

At Mercer Holdings, something similar happened.

People remained respectful.

But the assumption of inevitability disappeared.

Senior executives no longer treated Blake as the future chairman.

They challenged him.

Sometimes openly.

At first he resented it.

Then he realized they had always softened disagreement because of Harrison.

He had mistaken deference for respect.

Now he had to earn the latter.

He started doing something new.

Asking questions.

A forty-two-year-old operations director named Maya Chen disagreed with a logistics strategy Blake proposed.

Six months earlier, Blake would have overruled her.

Instead he asked:

“What am I missing?”

Maya blinked.

Then explained.

She was right.

Blake changed the plan.

Three weeks later, Harrison heard about it.

He said nothing.

But that evening, Evelyn noticed him smiling at his phone.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Harrison.”

He showed her an internal report.

A project saved seven million dollars because Blake changed course based on Maya’s objection.

Evelyn read it.

Her face softened.

“Good.”

Harrison watched her.

“You’re proud.”

“Yes.”

“You can be.”

“I know.”

She put the phone down.

“I’m still not ready.”

“You don’t have to be.”

That was the strange thing about love after betrayal.

It did not disappear.

It became complicated.

Evelyn could be proud of Blake’s growth and still not want him sitting at her kitchen table.

Both could be true.
