Chapter 16 - ANDREW’S NAME ON THE PAPERS

Natalie submitted photographs of Margaret’s bruises.

She claimed Andrew caused them before leaving for London.

She submitted the video of Margaret saying she feared him.

She submitted the guardianship petition signed by Andrew.

The story was constructed from real pieces arranged in a false order.

Andrew’s frequent travel made the timeline difficult.

Dominic had scheduled several documents on dates Andrew was home.

Natalie was no longer only defending herself.

She was attempting to replace Andrew as the central suspect.

Detective Shaw reviewed the mansion entrance logs.

Andrew’s access code appeared on nights he was abroad.

Someone had used his profile.

Natalie knew the code.

But knowing was not proof.

Then police examined Andrew’s black leather briefcase.

A miniature tracking tag was sewn into the handle.

Natalie monitored its location.

When the briefcase entered the mansion, she knew Andrew was home.

When it left for the airport, she knew she could act without interruption.

The hidden pocket served another purpose.

Natalie placed documents beneath the lining.

Andrew discovered them only when police removed it.

One document carried fingerprints.

Natalie’s.

Dominic’s.

And Margaret’s thumbprint pressed beside a forged signature.

Margaret remembered.

Natalie held her hand against the page after giving her the green pills.

The document authorized Andrew to assume full control of the trust.

Natalie planned to make Andrew appear responsible.

After control moved to him, she could use the signatures he gave her.

If the scheme failed, Andrew would carry the legal blame.

Natalie had built the plan so every path protected her.

Andrew looked at his genuine signature on the guardianship petition.

“I helped her.”

Detective Shaw corrected him.

“You were deceived.”

“I signed without reading.”

“Both can be true.”

Andrew had begun to understand that accountability did not require accepting crimes he did not commit.

He could acknowledge his carelessness without accepting Natalie’s abuse as his own.

At the hearing, Natalie’s attorney planned to use Andrew’s guilt against him.

Margaret requested a private meeting with her son.

“You want to confess to everything.”

“I failed you.”

“Yes.”

The direct answer surprised him.

“But Natalie chose to hurt me.”

Margaret tightened her hand around his.

“Do not make my suffering another thing you take away from me.”

Andrew looked confused.

“If you claim all the blame, you make her choices disappear.”

He nodded slowly.

At the hearing, he would tell the truth.

Not a version that protected him.

And not one that protected Natalie.
