Chapter 19 - THE PHOTOGRAPH’S MISSING CORNER

The missing corner of the photograph had not been found in the storage room.

Police searched Natalie’s belongings.

Nothing.

Dominic claimed Natalie destroyed it.

Margaret disagreed.

“She never destroys something valuable.”

Thomas had written a six-digit code behind the photograph.

It opened a private deposit box held outside the Wilson family bank.

The box contained the original trust ledger.

Without it, Natalie could challenge the copy recovered from the mansion.

Andrew remembered Natalie reaching for the frame when he first opened the storage room.

She knew the corner mattered.

Detective Shaw examined surveillance footage from the mansion entrance.

After the ambulance left, Natalie entered the study.

She carried the photograph for thirty-eight seconds.

Then she returned it to the hallway before police arrived.

The study contained hundreds of books.

A fireplace.

Thomas’s desk.

Andrew searched every drawer.

Margaret asked for a video call.

“Show me the fireplace.”

Andrew turned the camera.

Above it hung a portrait of Thomas.

Margaret directed him toward the frame.

Behind it was a narrow space.

Andrew found the torn photograph corner taped to the wood.

The six digits remained visible.

The deposit box contained the original trust ledger.

It also contained letters Thomas wrote to Andrew.

One concerned Natalie.

Thomas met her twice before his death.

He admired her intelligence.

But he distrusted her interest in the family structure.

Andrew, love should never require blindness.

The letter had never been delivered.

Thomas placed it in the box because he feared Andrew would interpret the warning as interference.

Margaret had known about it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You were in love.”

“So you stayed silent too.”

“Yes.”

The answer carried another difficult truth.

Margaret had also avoided a conflict because she feared losing Andrew.

Silence had protected Natalie from every direction.

The deposit box contained one more item.

A recorded message from Thomas.

If Margaret became incapacitated, control of the trust would move to three independent trustees.

Not Andrew.

Not his spouse.

Not a private guardian.

Natalie’s plan could never legally succeed.

Dominic had known.

He concealed the clause from her because he intended to steal her portion after the transfer failed.

Natalie had tortured Margaret for control she could never obtain.

When told, Margaret closed her eyes.

“She did all of that for nothing.”

Andrew held the ledger.

“No.”

Margaret looked at him.

“She did it because she believed hurting you would give her power.”

The hearing began the next morning.

Margaret insisted on attending in person.
