CHAPTER 2

# CHAPTER 2
## The Man in the Photograph
The birthday celebration ended without cake, music, or farewell speeches.
Within twenty minutes, the guests had been escorted from the ballroom. Family members gathered in small groups throughout the mansion, arguing in whispers about what Eleanor had confessed.
Daniel remained near the broken pearl necklace.
Robert wasn’t your father.
The sentence made less sense each time he repeated it.
Catherine stood beside their mother, pressing a cold cloth against Eleanor’s swollen cheek.
Victor Lang closed the ballroom doors.
“No one discusses what was said tonight,” he announced.
Daniel turned toward him.
“You don’t give orders in this house.”
“I am trying to prevent a family tragedy from becoming a public scandal.”
“The tragedy happened twenty-two years ago.”
Eleanor looked exhausted.
“Daniel, come with me.”
“Where?”
“My study.”
“I want the truth here.”
“You’ve already humiliated her enough,” Catherine said.
Daniel looked at his sister.
“She just confessed to killing the man who raised us.”
“She also said he wasn’t your father. Not ours.”
The distinction cut deeper than Daniel expected.
Eleanor walked slowly from the ballroom. No one tried to stop her.
Daniel followed.
Her private study occupied the eastern corner of the mansion. It was smaller than Robert’s old office, with pale blue walls, family photographs, and shelves filled with letters.
Eleanor sat behind her desk.
Catherine remained near the door. Victor entered last.
Daniel stayed standing.
“Who was my father?”
Eleanor looked at Victor.
He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
Daniel noticed.
“Get out.”
Victor did not move.
“Your mother is shaken.”
“She survived the truth for twenty-two years. She can survive telling it.”
Eleanor spoke before Victor could respond.
“His name was Thomas Vale.”
Daniel had never heard the name.
“Who was he?”
“A journalist.”
“What kind?”
“Investigative.”
“Did Robert know?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“He knew before you were born.”
Daniel felt another piece of his identity collapse.
“You had an affair.”
“Yes.”
“And Robert raised me anyway?”
“He loved you.”
“Did Thomas?”
Eleanor’s face tightened.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You don’t know whether my biological father loved me?”
“He disappeared before you were born.”
“Disappeared?”
Victor stepped forward.
“Thomas Vale was killed while investigating organized crime.”
Eleanor looked sharply at him.
“That was never proven.”
“His body was found.”
“A body was found.”
Daniel watched them.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
No one answered.
He moved toward Eleanor’s desk.
“You said you killed Robert.”
“I caused his death.”
“How?”
Eleanor folded her hands.
“Robert discovered that Thomas might still be alive. He planned to find him.”
“Why would that make you kill him?”
“Because Robert wasn’t searching to reunite you.”
“What did he want?”
“To finish what he started.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What did Robert start?”
Eleanor’s eyes moved toward the family photographs.
“Your father’s company was not built honestly.”
Brooks Global had begun as a small real estate firm before becoming an international empire worth billions. Robert’s public story was famous: a self-made businessman who transformed neglected neighborhoods and created thousands of jobs.
Eleanor continued.
“Thomas discovered that Robert’s earliest developments were financed through criminal organizations. Money laundering, political bribery, illegal land seizures.”
Daniel glanced at Victor.
The attorney’s expression revealed nothing.
“Thomas planned to publish an investigation,” Eleanor said. “Then he disappeared.”
“You think Robert killed him?”
“I know Robert ordered it.”
Catherine covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped back.
The father he had mourned was becoming a stranger.
“Where is the proof?”
“There was a recording.”
“Was?”
“Robert found it.”
“And destroyed it?”
“I believed so.”
Daniel looked toward Victor’s briefcase.
The attorney had dropped it when Eleanor said Robert was not Daniel’s father. One metal clasp remained open.
Something white protruded from inside.
A photograph.
Daniel crossed the room before Victor could react.
He pulled it free.
The image showed a younger Eleanor standing beside a dark-haired man outside a roadside motel. Eleanor was visibly pregnant.
The man beside her had Daniel’s face.
Not merely similar features.
The same eyes. The same jaw. The same small curve in the left eyebrow.
Thomas Vale.
The photograph had been taken thirty-five years earlier.
On the back was a recent message written in black ink.
Tell Daniel I’m still waiting.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“You said he disappeared.”
She stood abruptly.
“Where did you get that?”
Victor seized the photograph.
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
“You knew Thomas was alive.”
Victor’s composure cracked.
“This photograph arrived yesterday.”
“From whom?”
“No return address.”
Daniel pulled it back.
Eleanor stared at the image.
Her face carried more fear than hope.
“He found us.”
“Who?”
“Thomas.”
Daniel studied the recent handwriting.
“If he’s alive, why didn’t he contact me?”
“Because he doesn’t want a son,” Eleanor whispered. “He wants revenge.”
Daniel sat opposite her.
“Start at the beginning.”
Eleanor’s voice became quieter.
“Thomas and I met when I was thirty-four. Robert and I had been married for twelve years. Our marriage was already broken, though the public never knew.”
“You loved Thomas.”
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“He was investigating Brooks Global. At first, he used me to gain information. Later, the relationship became real.”
“And you became pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“What did Robert do when he found out?”
“He offered Thomas money to disappear.”
“Did he take it?”
“No.”
Daniel felt unexpected pride in a man he had never met.
Eleanor continued.
“Thomas recorded Robert admitting to the early crimes. He planned to give the recording to federal prosecutors.”
“Then Robert had him killed.”
“He ordered Victor to arrange it.”
Daniel turned toward the attorney.
Victor’s face went still.
Catherine whispered, “Is that true?”
Victor slowly removed his glasses.
“I was Robert’s attorney. I carried out many instructions.”
Daniel moved toward him.
“Did you kill Thomas?”
“No.”
“Did you arrange it?”
Victor looked at Eleanor.
She said nothing.
“I arranged for him to be taken from his apartment,” Victor admitted. “The men were supposed to retrieve the recording and frighten him.”
“What happened?”
“The vehicle crashed during transport. One body was recovered.”
“But Thomas survived.”
“It appears so.”
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“Then why did Mother say she killed Robert?”
Eleanor opened a drawer and removed an old envelope.
Inside was Robert’s death certificate and a handwritten confession.
“On the night Robert died, I disabled the tracking system in his car,” she said.
“Why?”
“He was going to meet someone who claimed to be Thomas. I wanted Robert to go alone. I thought Thomas would expose him.”
“But the car went over the cliff.”
“Yes.”
“Did you damage the brakes?”
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“I paid Frank Collins to do it.”
Catherine began crying.
Daniel felt numb.
Eleanor continued.
“Not to destroy them. To install a remote disabling system.”
“Why?”
“So I could stop Robert’s car before he reached Thomas.”
“But it failed.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked toward the dark windows.
“It worked exactly as designed.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You stopped his car near the cliff.”
“Yes.”
“What happened after that?”
“I watched through the tracking monitor as someone approached him.”
“Thomas?”
“I believed so.”
“Then?”
“The car moved again.”
Eleanor swallowed.
“And went over the edge.”
Daniel looked down at the photograph of his biological father.
“Who restarted the car?”
Eleanor’s eyes moved toward Victor.
The attorney was no longer standing near the door.
He was gone.
On Eleanor’s desk, his phone remained behind.
Its screen displayed a newly received message.
Daniel picked it up.
The message contained a live video.
Victor was walking through the mansion’s lower garage toward a waiting black sedan.
A man stood beside the open rear door.
Older now, his hair touched with gray, but unmistakable.
Thomas Vale.
Daniel’s biological father.
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
Then he smiled.
