CHAPTER 5

# CHAPTER 5
## The Brother Behind Thomas Vale
Michael Vale stood at the bottom of the grand staircase while Victor lay unconscious behind him.
Daniel picked up the fallen gun.
“Don’t move.”
Michael raised his hands.
He looked like Daniel because he had paid surgeons to resemble Thomas Vale.
That realization was more disturbing than the resemblance itself.
“You’re Thomas’s brother,” Daniel said.
“Younger by three years.”
“Where is Thomas?”
Michael looked at Eleanor.
“She knows.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“I believed he died.”
“That belief has been useful to many people.”
Catherine knelt beside Victor and checked his pulse.
“He’s alive.”
“Unfortunately,” Michael said.
Daniel aimed the gun at his chest.
“Why did you pretend to be my father?”
“To see whether Eleanor would tell you the truth.”
“You could have contacted me.”
“I did.”
“The photograph?”
“The bank records. The photograph of Frank Collins. Every anonymous clue you received over the past six years.”
Daniel felt anger returning.
“You manipulated me into attacking her.”
“I gave you facts.”
“You arranged them to look like evidence of murder.”
Michael’s expression remained calm.
“I needed Eleanor frightened enough to confess.”
“You almost got her killed.”
“I underestimated your temper.”
Daniel’s finger tightened around the trigger.
Eleanor stepped between them.
“Daniel, don’t.”
Michael smiled.
“Still protecting the men who hurt you.”
“I’m protecting my son.”
“From his own choices?”
Eleanor flinched.
Catherine looked at Michael.
“My mother wrote that Victor intercepted her letters.”
“He did.”
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“Prove it.”
Michael removed a phone from his coat and placed it on a banquet table.
A live video appeared.
A silver-haired woman sat inside a simple room, reading beside a window.
Rebecca Hayes.
Evelyn.
Catherine approached the screen.
“Mom?”
The woman looked up as though she had heard something, but the video contained no sound from the mansion.
Michael picked up the phone before Catherine could touch it.
“You will see her after Eleanor gives me what belongs to my family.”
“What?” Daniel asked.
“The original recording Thomas made of Robert.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“It was destroyed.”
“No. Thomas hid it before Robert’s men took him.”
“If you knew where it was, you wouldn’t be here.”
Michael’s face hardened.
“Thomas told you.”
“He never did.”
“He trusted you.”
“And I betrayed him.”
The honesty seemed to surprise Michael.
Eleanor continued.
“I gave Robert the location of Thomas’s backup files. But the recording wasn’t there.”
Michael looked toward Daniel.
“He hid it for his child.”
Daniel felt the room grow colder.
“You mean me.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Michael smiled faintly.
“That is what we are going to discover.”
Victor groaned on the staircase.
Michael turned.
The movement gave Daniel an opening.
He crossed the distance and struck Michael with the gun. Michael fell against a table. Catherine seized the phone.
Eleanor called mansion security, but the line was dead.
Michael laughed from the floor.
“You still think this is your house.”
Men appeared at the ballroom doors.
Four of them, dressed in black.
Daniel raised the weapon, but Michael’s men aimed first.
“Put it down,” Michael said.
Daniel obeyed.
Michael stood and wiped blood from his lip.
“We are going to Robert’s study.”
The study had remained locked since Robert’s death. Eleanor carried the key on a chain beneath her dress.
Inside, nothing had changed. Robert’s desk faced the garden. His books filled the walls. A portrait of Daniel at age five stood near the window.
Michael searched the room methodically.
“Thomas told me the recording was hidden where Robert would never look.”
Daniel studied the portrait.
Robert had looked at him every day.
Perhaps the hiding place was not a location but a person.
“What did Thomas give me?” Daniel asked Eleanor.
“When?”
“Before he disappeared.”
“You were not yet born.”
“Then he gave you something intended for me.”
Eleanor looked toward the desk.
“He gave me a music box.”
Daniel remembered it.
A small wooden box that played “Moon River.” Eleanor kept it in his nursery and later stored it in the attic.
They found it inside a trunk beneath old children’s clothes.
Michael opened the box.
The melody began.
Nothing else happened.
Daniel examined the underside. A faint line divided the wooden base.
He pressed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside lay a microcassette and a small silver key.
Michael’s hands began trembling.
“My brother’s voice.”
Daniel took the cassette.
“Rebecca first.”
Michael looked toward Catherine.
“If the recording proves what I believe, she walks free.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
“No one walks free.”
They placed the cassette inside Robert’s old recorder.
Static filled the study.
Then Thomas Vale spoke.
“My name is Thomas Vale. If this recording is found, Robert Brooks has likely killed me.”
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Thomas described Robert’s crimes: stolen land, murdered witnesses, bribed judges, and the framing of Arthur Hayes.
Then he spoke of Eleanor.
“She gave me access to Robert’s files. She risked everything. I love her, and I believe she loves me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father’s voice sounded younger and more vulnerable than he expected.
“If our child survives, I want him to know that Robert Brooks is not the greatest danger.”
Michael leaned toward the recorder.
Thomas continued.
“My brother, Michael, believes the Brooks empire belongs to us because our father invested in Robert’s first company. Michael does not care about justice. He wants power.”
Michael’s face changed.
Daniel looked at him.
The recording continued.
“If I disappear, do not trust Michael. He will use my name, my work, and even my child to take what he believes is his.”
Michael stopped the tape.
Daniel raised his eyes.
“You knew.”
“My brother was confused.”
“He described exactly what you’ve done.”
Michael removed a gun from his coat.
Eleanor stepped toward him.
“You never wanted the evidence against Robert. You wanted Brooks Global.”
“I wanted what Robert stole from our family.”
Thomas’s voice resumed unexpectedly.
The recorder had not stopped. Michael had only pressed the wrong button.
“There is one more truth,” Thomas said.
“Eleanor’s child is not mine.”
Everyone froze.
Michael stared at the machine.
Thomas continued.
“Robert altered the medical records. Eleanor was already pregnant when we met. Daniel is Robert’s biological son.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
She had gone pale.
“No,” Michael whispered.
Thomas’s final words filled the study.
“Robert allowed Eleanor to believe I was the father because he knew the lie would bind her to me—and lead him to my evidence.”
The tape clicked off.
Daniel had spent one night losing two fathers.
Now the dead man he hated had become his father again.
Michael raised his gun toward Eleanor.
“You knew.”
She shook her head.
“I learned only after Robert died.”
“You let me believe Daniel was Thomas’s son.”
“I feared what you would do.”
Michael’s eyes filled with rage.
He turned the gun toward Daniel.
“If you are Robert’s son, then everything belongs to you.”
Before he could fire, Victor appeared in the doorway.
Blood ran down the side of his face.
He shot Michael in the shoulder.
Michael collapsed.
His men returned fire.
Victor fell beside the desk.
Daniel pulled Eleanor and Catherine behind the bookcase as bullets destroyed the room.
In the chaos, Michael’s phone slid across the floor.
The live video of Rebecca remained open.
A masked man entered her room.
Catherine screamed at the screen.
The man seized Rebecca and dragged her from the chair.
Then the feed went black.
