Chapter 1 - THE BOY IN THE BLACK T-SHIRTI arrived at the Porsche gala wearing grease on my left wrist.

It was not deliberate.

I had spent the afternoon helping remove a damaged transmission from a student’s restoration project.

The stain remained after I washed my hands.

My black T-shirt was clean but faded.

My jeans had a pale mark across one knee.

The soles of my sneakers were worn.

A basic black backpack hung from my right shoulder.

No watch.

No tailored jacket.

Nothing that belonged beneath the crystal lights of Dallas’s most exclusive automotive gala.

People noticed.

A woman wearing emerald earrings looked at my sneakers before turning away.

Two men beside a champagne table glanced at my backpack and whispered to each other.

A security guard studied me for several seconds.

I showed him my digital invitation.

He scanned it.

The screen flashed green.

“Enjoy the gala, Mr. Vale.”

“Thank you.”

The venue occupied a renovated exhibition hall with black marble floors and twenty-foot glass walls.

Spotlights followed the lines of rare vehicles arranged across raised platforms.

Guests wore tuxedos and evening gowns.

Waiters carried champagne.

A quartet played near the auction stage.

I had not come for the champagne.

I had come to inspect six vehicles.

Five were traveling to the gala under a loan agreement signed by the Vale Automotive Trust.

The sixth was already inside.

A silver Porsche stood beneath a circular spotlight.

The moment I saw it, the noise around me disappeared.

I recognized the narrow scratch near the passenger-side mirror.

The hand-stitched red thread around the steering wheel.

The small silver bird attached beneath the dashboard.

My mother’s car.

I had not seen it since I was fourteen.

According to the trust inventory, it was secured in our family museum’s climate-controlled storage facility.

Yet it stood in Dallas beneath a sign reading:

PRIVATE ACQUISITION OPPORTUNITY

SERIOUS OFFERS INVITED

My stomach tightened.

The Porsche was not authorized for sale.

I approached the platform.

A velvet rope surrounded the vehicle.

I remained behind it.

I leaned slightly to examine the identification plate near the windshield.

“Step away from the car.”

The voice came from my left.

A showroom employee in a luxury black suit walked toward me.

He was thirty-eight, perhaps forty.

Neatly styled brown hair.

Polished shoes.

A silver badge reading:

MARCUS REED

SENIOR GALA SPECIALIST

I straightened.

“I’m behind the barrier.”

“You’re too close.”

“I haven’t touched anything.”

Marcus looked me up and down.

His attention stopped on the worn sneakers.

“Then keep it that way.”

He glanced at my backpack.

“This is a private automotive event.”

“I know.”

“For verified collectors.”

“I was verified at the entrance.”

He gave a short laugh.

“Someone must have scanned the wrong invitation.”

I reached for my phone.

“I can show you the confirmation.”

Marcus stepped between me and the Porsche.

“If you scratch that car, can you even afford to pay for it?”

Several guests turned toward us.

I looked at him.

May you like

He pointed toward the entrance.

“This place isn’t for you.”
