Chapter 7 - Marcus Changes SidesDaniel did not trust Marcus.

That was the first thing he told Jon Ellis.

The second:

“I still want to hear him.”

They met in Jon’s office at 4:00 p.m.

Marcus arrived without an attorney.

Jon disliked that.

“You understand I represent Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You understand nothing you say is privileged.”

“Yes.”

“You understand I may turn information over to law enforcement.”

“Yes.”

Marcus sat.

He looked exhausted.

No expensive confidence now.

No polished smile.

Daniel remained standing.

“Talk.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I met Claire before you did.”

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“How long?”

“Eight years.”

Daniel and Claire had been married nine.

A cold sensation spread through him.

“Before our wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Were you sleeping together?”

Marcus looked down.

“Sometimes.”

Daniel laughed once.

Claire hadn’t cheated on him.

Not exactly.

She had never stopped.

“Why did she marry me?”

Marcus hesitated.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Wrong moment to protect her.”

“It wasn’t supposed to be about money at first.”

“At first?”

“She liked you.”

“That’s comforting.”

Marcus continued.

“She liked the life.”

Daniel stared.

“Which life?”

“Your family.”

“Eleanor.”

Marcus nodded.

Daniel felt sick.

Marcus knew about Eleanor before Claire met Daniel.

“How?”

“My father handled commercial lending for Carter Developments years ago.”

Daniel remembered the name.

Hale Bank.

Small regional institution his mother stopped using after a dispute.

“Your father hated mine.”

Marcus shrugged.

“He thought Eleanor destroyed him.”

“What happened?”

“She exposed improper loans.”

Daniel remembered fragments.

A lender sanctioned.

A bank sold.

Marcus continued.

“My father lost everything.”

“So you targeted my family?”

“No.”

“Claire did?”

Marcus paused.

“She knew who you were when she met you.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And she knew about the house.”

“Yes.”

Jon Ellis leaned forward.

“What was the original plan?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“None.”

Daniel laughed.

“Try again.”

Marcus rubbed his face.

“Claire wanted security.”

“That’s not a plan.”

“She thought marrying into the Carter family solved it.”

“And you?”

“I moved on.”

“You were kissing her in my hallway yesterday.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She came back to me after Eleanor got sick.”

“Why?”

“She said Eleanor was changing the trust.”

Daniel stared.

“She knew before I did?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Claire had access to Eleanor’s email.”

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“Explain.”

“She installed a remote-support app on Eleanor’s laptop.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

Eleanor had complained her computer acted strangely months before her death.

Daniel hired someone to clean it.

Claire volunteered to help.

“She was reading my mother’s email.”

Marcus nodded.

“Trust drafts. Attorney messages. Medical correspondence.”

Jon started taking notes.

Daniel forced himself calm.

“Then?”

“Claire discovered Eleanor planned to keep the house from spouses permanently.”

“She panicked.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she had debts.”

Daniel frowned.

“What debts?”

Marcus looked at him.

“About three million.”

Daniel stared.

Claire had never mentioned personal debt.

Gambling?

Business?

Marcus explained.

“Private investments. Failed luxury resale business. Tax debt.”

“And you loaned her money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Two million.”

Daniel laughed.

“So you needed her to gain control of the house.”

“At first, repayment.”

“At first.”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Then she proposed the trust strategy.”

“Custody.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she planned to frame me.”

“I knew she wanted evidence that you were unstable.”

“Did you know she rehearsed Lily?”

“No.”

“Did you know Vanessa Harper interviewed her?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I introduced Vanessa.”

Daniel moved before Jon could stop him.

He grabbed Marcus by the jacket.

“You sent a disgraced evaluator into my house to manipulate my seven-year-old?”

“I didn’t know Claire would tell her to fabricate—”

Daniel shoved him back.

Jon stood.

“Daniel.”

Marcus didn’t retaliate.

Good.

He continued.

“I told Vanessa to document conflict.”

“There wasn’t any.”

“There was.”

“Between adults.”

“Yes.”

“You turned my daughter into evidence.”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

Daniel sat because if he remained standing, he might hit him.

Jon asked:

“What changed?”

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

“The lien.”

“What about it?”

“Claire structured it differently than we agreed.”

“How?”

“I thought Hale Meridian would receive repayment after a court-approved sale.”

“And?”

“She added a participation agreement.”

“Who with?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel stared.

“You signed documents without knowing?”

“Through a special-purpose entity.”

Jon asked:

“Name?”

“Redwood Horizon LLC.”

Daniel remembered the male voice on Claire’s call.

Forty percent offshore.

“Who owns Redwood?”

“Nominee.”

Jon’s fingers moved across a keyboard.

Marcus continued.

“Yesterday I discovered Claire had pledged my company’s loan position to Redwood.”

Daniel frowned.

“Meaning?”

“If the house sells, Redwood gets forty percent.”

“And you?”

“Less than she promised.”

“So now you care about ethics?”

Marcus met his eyes.

“No.”

At least honest.

“I care about not going to prison for a fraud I didn’t design.”

Daniel stared.

“Too late.”

Marcus nodded.

“Probably.”

He reached into his bag.

Daniel tensed.

Marcus removed a flash drive.

“Claire doesn’t know I recorded her.”

Jon raised an eyebrow.

“Why did you?”

“Because I stopped trusting her.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

He plugged in the drive.

Audio files.

Dozens.

One named:

REDWOOD.

Claire’s voice.

“Marcus is useful, but emotional.”

Unknown male voice:

“He thinks you love him.”

“He likes thinking that.”

“Daniel?”

Claire laughed.

“Daniel thinks marriage means something.”

The man asked:

“And the kids?”

“They’re leverage.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Marcus looked sick listening.

Claire continued:

“Once I have temporary custody, we push Daniel into settlement.”

“What if he fights?”

“He won’t risk losing Lily.”

“And Noah?”

A pause.

Then Claire:

“Noah is easier.”

Daniel’s eyes opened.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus shook his head.

“I never heard beyond this.”

The recording continued.

Male voice:

“Paternity?”

Claire:

“Not yet.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Marcus looked at him.

“What?”

Jon leaned forward.

Daniel whispered:

“Play it.”

Male voice:

“If Noah isn’t Daniel’s, Eleanor’s trust treatment changes.”

Claire:

“Exactly.”

Marcus stared.

Daniel felt all warmth leave the room.

The unknown man asked:

“And is he?”

Claire laughed softly.

“I’m not stupid enough to answer that on a phone.”

Recording ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

Noah.

Six months old.

Claire had just introduced a new weapon.

Maybe only to manipulate someone.

Maybe not.

Marcus spoke carefully.

“Daniel…”

“Don’t.”

The room went silent.

Jon asked:

“Do you know who the male voice is?”

Marcus shook his head.

“I thought maybe an attorney.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Claire’s attorney?”

“No. Her lawyer doesn’t know the financial side.”

Jon typed.

“Redwood Horizon.”

Corporate filing appeared.

Delaware.

Registered agent.

Layered ownership.

But one manager name existed on an older financing document.

Jon stopped.

“What?”

Daniel stood.

Jon turned the screen.

Manager:

Peter Carter.

Daniel stared.

His uncle.

His late father’s younger brother.

A man Daniel had not spoken to in five years.

The same man who had fought Eleanor over the family estate.

And lost.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Claire’s partner isn’t you.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel stared at his uncle’s name.

“She’s been working with my family.”

Then his phone rang.

Rachel Kim.

“Daniel, I found something in Eleanor’s files.”

“What?”

“A sealed codicil.”

He closed his eyes.

“Another one?”

“This one concerns Lily.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“What about her?”

Rachel’s voice lowered.

“Your mother suspected Claire was trying to gain control of the children’s inheritance before she died.”

Daniel froze.

“She knew?”

“She wrote down a name.”

“Claire?”

“No.”

May you like

Rachel paused.

“Peter.”
