Chapter 9 - Room 1408Daniel did not go alone.

He wanted to.

Jon refused.

So did the police liaison now working the financial case.

They did not storm the hotel room.

They verified.

Room 1408 was registered to Andrew Cole.

Daniel knew no Andrew Cole.

The hotel confirmed two guests had entered repeatedly.

Claire.

And a man around forty.

Dark hair.

Daniel’s age.

Jon obtained a photograph from lobby security.

Daniel stared.

The man looked familiar.

Not because Daniel knew him.

Because he looked like James Carter.

Daniel’s father.

Same nose.

Same posture.

Same deep-set eyes.

“Who is he?”

Jon searched records.

Andrew Cole.

Forty-one.

Born in Connecticut.

Mother:

Marianne Cole.

Daniel knew the name.

His father’s executive assistant.

Twenty years.

She left the company shortly before James died.

Daniel remembered her at Christmas parties.

Polite.

Quiet.

Always near his father.

His stomach turned.

“My father had another son.”

“Looks possible.”

Andrew was three years older than Daniel.

Which meant the affair predated Daniel’s birth.

Daniel felt almost nothing at first.

Too many shocks.

Then anger.

Not at Andrew.

At the dead man who had left another secret.

“What does Claire want with him?”

Jon opened corporate records.

Andrew owned seventy percent of Redwood Horizon.

Daniel laughed softly.

“There’s our forty percent.”

Peter was not the final partner.

Andrew was.

Claire had built alliances inside both sides of the Carter family.

Uncle Peter.

Half-brother Andrew.

Marcus.

All of them pointing toward Eleanor’s property.

Why?

Jon said:

“Andrew filed a paternity claim against James’s estate six years ago.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“Sealed.”

“Outcome?”

“Dismissed.”

“Why?”

“Insufficient evidence. James was deceased. Eleanor opposed exhumation.”

Daniel felt another anger.

Mom knew.

She knew Andrew existed.

Maybe that explained some of the trust changes.

“Did Andrew get anything?”

“Private settlement.”

“How much?”

“Unknown.”

Daniel stared at the hotel.

“Not enough.”

They did not confront Claire.

Instead police obtained legal preservation of hotel security while Jon contacted Rachel.

By evening, they learned Andrew’s claim.

He believed Eleanor cheated him.

James had promised to recognize him.

After James died, Eleanor blocked it.

Andrew spent years trying to prove he was a Carter.

Then Claire found him.

How?

Through Eleanor’s hacked emails.

Everything returned to that.

Claire had discovered every buried family fracture.

Then weaponized them.

Marcus for financing.

Peter for revenge.

Andrew for bloodline claims.

Vanessa for custody.

Daniel watched Claire become larger than infidelity.

She had mapped his weaknesses.

Family.

Children.

Trust.

Grief.

The house.

Then the paternity threat.

Was Noah another map point?

They requested a legal DNA test immediately.

Daniel hated himself for it.

Not because biology changed love.

It didn’t.

But because Claire was using uncertainty.

He needed truth before she weaponized it publicly.

The sample process was quiet.

Noah cried because of the cheek swab.

Daniel almost laughed at the absurdity.

Hours of catastrophe.

And the baby objected most to cotton in his mouth.

Lily held his hand.

“Does this hurt?”

“No.”

“Why are they doing it?”

Daniel chose honesty appropriate for seven.

“To check something about our family.”

“Is he still my brother?”

“Always.”

She accepted that.

Good.

Daniel wished adults could.

That night, another camera file surfaced.

His office.

Four months earlier.

Claire and Andrew.

First time Daniel had seen him inside the house.

Andrew looked at a portrait of James.

“So that’s him.”

Claire stood behind him.

“You really never met?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“I was seventeen.”

“What happened?”

“He gave me five hundred dollars and told me not to contact his family again.”

Claire laughed.

“Classy.”

Andrew turned.

“You married his son.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Claire smiled.

“Because Eleanor Carter thought she was untouchable.”

Daniel stopped playback.

Jon looked at him.

Claire’s motive was changing again.

“Eleanor.”

Daniel whispered.

“Claire had something against my mother before marriage.”

Jon nodded.

“Maybe.”

Daniel replayed.

Andrew asked:

“What did Eleanor do to you?”

Claire’s face changed.

“She destroyed my mother.”

Daniel leaned closer.

Andrew:

“How?”

Claire:

“Long story.”

“Tell me.”

Claire looked toward the camera she believed dead.

Then said:

“My mother worked for Carter Developments.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“What was her name?” Andrew asked.

Claire answered:

“Rebecca Sloan.”

Daniel knew it.

Everyone at Carter Developments over forty knew it.

Rebecca Sloan.

Senior accounting manager.

Convicted of embezzling $1.8 million from the company seventeen years earlier.

Eleanor testified against her.

Rebecca went to prison.

She died five years later.

Daniel stared.

Claire had never told him.

Never once.

Andrew’s voice continued:

“You married Eleanor’s son?”

Claire laughed softly.

“I told you.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to see what it felt like.”

“What?”

“To have everything she protected.”

Daniel stopped the video.

Jon swore under his breath.

Daniel felt nauseated.

Nine years.

Marriage.

Birthdays.

Christmas.

Lily.

Noah.

Had any of it been real?

Then the recording resumed.

Andrew asked:

“Did you love him?”

Claire’s face softened.

For the first time in all the footage.

“Yes.”

Daniel froze.

Andrew laughed.

“That complicates things.”

Claire looked down.

“I learned to hate that too.”

Daniel stared at her recorded face.

Real sadness.

Then Claire said:

“He chose Eleanor every time.”

Daniel felt the unfairness immediately.

He had cared for his dying mother.

Handled her business.

Protected her estate.

Claire had treated every hour as betrayal.

Andrew asked:

“So now?”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Now I take what she tried to keep.”

“And Daniel?”

Claire’s answer came after a long pause.

“He’ll survive.”

“And the kids?”

Another pause.

Daniel held his breath.

Claire whispered:

“They’re the part I didn’t plan for.”

Lily entered the office behind Daniel.

He paused quickly.

Too late.

She had heard.

“The part she didn’t plan for?”

Daniel turned.

Lily’s eyes filled.

“Did Mom not want us?”

He stood.

“No.”

“But she said—”

“No.”

Daniel crouched.

“She was talking about her bad plan. Not about whether she loved you.”

“Did she?”

The question came quietly.

“Love me?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He did not know how to answer.

Claire had neglected her.

Manipulated her.

Used her.

But Lily still needed truth without cruelty.

“I think your mom has feelings she doesn’t know how to handle.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Seven years old.

Too perceptive.

Daniel swallowed.

“She should have loved you better.”

Lily started crying.

Daniel held her.

His phone buzzed.

DNA LAB.

PRELIMINARY RESULTS AVAILABLE.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Opened it.

Paternity probability:

99.9997%.

Daniel Carter was Noah’s biological father.

He closed his eyes.

Relief.

Then anger.

Claire had known.

Maybe.

And still used doubt.

But the report contained one additional note.

A requested kinship comparison had been run against Carter family genetic markers from an earlier estate case.

Unexpected close familial match detected between Noah Carter and Andrew Cole.

Daniel frowned.

That made sense if Andrew was James’s son.

Then he read the estimated relationship.

Not half-uncle.

Not distant.

The probability favored—

maternal biological relationship.

Daniel stared.

Impossible.

He reread.

Then called the lab.

The genetic counselor explained carefully.

Noah was Daniel’s child.

But Noah also shared unexpectedly close DNA with Andrew through Claire’s side.

Daniel’s voice went dry.

“That means what?”

“Mr. Cole appears to be related to Noah’s mother as well.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Andrew was connected to Claire.

Not only James.

The counselor continued.

“Possibly half-sibling level, depending on the family structure.”

Daniel stared at Claire’s image frozen on the laptop.

Andrew Cole—

James Carter’s secret son—

May you like

might also be Claire’s brother.

And neither of them had said a word.
