Chapter 10 - Claire’s Sister Had Been HidingEmily Carter had not attended Claire’s funeral.

At the time, Daniel had hated her for it.

Claire’s only sister.

Gone.

No explanation beyond a short text:

I can’t do this.

Daniel assumed grief.

Then Emily changed her number.

Moved.

Cut contact with Sophie.

Daniel thought it unforgivable.

Now he found her sitting inside room fourteen of a decaying roadside motel.

She looked thinner than he remembered.

Brown hair cut short.

No makeup.

A scar along one wrist.

Daniel closed the door behind him.

“You sent the messages.”

“Yes.”

“You photographed Lake Seven?”

Emily frowned.

“What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Wrong nightmare.”

She almost smiled.

Then Daniel’s anger returned.

“You disappeared.”

“I had to.”

“You abandoned Sophie.”

Emily’s face broke.

“I know.”

“She asked for you for months.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Emily looked toward the window.

“Because Rachel threatened her.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“Not directly. She threatened you and Sophie through me.”

“When?”

“Two days after Claire died.”

Daniel sat.

Emily explained.

Claire had called her the week before the accident.

Told her about Bellmere.

Nolan.

Rachel.

Margaret.

Robert’s secret cooperation.

Claire asked Emily to hold something if anything happened.

“The ledger.”

Emily nodded.

“Where is it?”

“Safe.”

“Why didn’t you give it to police?”

“Because Claire told me not to.”

Daniel stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“She didn’t trust local police.”

“Why?”

“Robert had been paying people for years.”

Daniel thought of his father’s political connections.

“Federal authorities?”

“Claire planned to go to them.”

“Then she died.”

“Yes.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“The morning after the crash, someone broke into my apartment.”

“What did they take?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why?”

“They left a photograph.”

“Of what?”

“You and Sophie.”

Daniel felt cold.

“And a note.”

Emily pulled an old folded piece of paper from her bag.

Daniel opened it.

Walk away and the child keeps her father.

His chest tightened.

“Rachel?”

“I didn’t know then.”

“How do you know now?”

“Claire had photographs.”

Emily opened a laptop.

Claire’s files.

Rachel entering Bellmere offices.

Nolan.

Margaret.

Robert.

Bank records.

Daniel stared.

“Why now?”

“Because Sophie found the recorder.”

“How did you know?”

Emily looked guilty.

“I’ve been watching the property.”

Daniel stood.

“You’ve been spying on us?”

“Protecting Sophie.”

“From a motel?”

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds insane.”

“I tried coming back twice.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

Daniel remembered receiving anonymous flowers on Claire’s birthday.

“And?”

“Rachel found me.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“She threatened you again?”

“Yes.”

Daniel paced.

“Why not call me?”

“Because Claire warned me that if Bellmere people realized you knew, they’d use Sophie.”

He laughed bitterly.

“They did anyway.”

Emily looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel sat again.

“The woman at the hospital had Claire’s bracelet.”

Emily’s face changed.

“Rachel.”

“So it was her.”

“Yes.”

“How did she get it?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Was Rachel with Claire after the gas station?”

Emily hesitated.

“I think so.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire called me from the car.”

“What did she say?”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“She said Nolan had betrayed her.”

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“What exactly?”

“She said Nolan told Rachel where the ledger was.”

“Where was it?”

“Not where Claire actually put it.”

“Claire gave him a false location?”

“Yes.”

“Smart.”

“She didn’t fully trust him.”

Daniel thought of Nolan’s secret copies.

His sudden disappearance.

Maybe Nolan was not simply fleeing police.

Maybe he was fleeing Rachel.

“What happened on the call?”

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Claire said Rachel was following her.”

Daniel stopped.

“On the road?”

“Yes.”

“Did she say what vehicle?”

“Black SUV.”

The traffic camera.

“What happened?”

“I told her to call police.”

“And?”

“She said she had one more stop.”

“Where?”

“Your mother.”

Daniel frowned.

“She had already confronted Margaret.”

“Not Margaret.”

Emily looked at him.

“Your father.”

Daniel stared.

“Robert was dead when Claire died.”

Emily went pale.

“No.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Daniel…”

“My father died six months before Claire.”

Emily stared at him in shock.

“Claire met Robert three weeks before she died.”

Daniel stood.

“That’s impossible.”

“I saw him.”

“No.”

“Claire took me.”

Daniel felt disoriented.

His father’s death certificate.

Funeral.

Casket.

Margaret grieving.

Daniel attending.

He had seen Robert in the coffin.

Or thought he had.

Emily realized his confusion.

“Wait.”

She opened Claire’s files.

Scrolled.

Found a photograph.

An older man sitting in a wheelchair.

Thin.

Sick.

Daniel stared.

It was not Robert.

Not exactly.

The man resembled him.

Same jaw.

Same eyes.

But older.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s my uncle.”

Richard Whitmore.

Robert’s younger brother.

Estranged for twenty years.

Daniel had not seen him since childhood.

Emily exhaled.

“Claire called him Robert.”

“Why?”

“Because he told her he was.”

Daniel felt cold.

Richard had impersonated his dead brother.

Why?

Emily opened another file.

A DNA report.

Daniel stared.

“What is this?”

“Claire ordered it.”

“Whose DNA?”

“Robert and Richard.”

Daniel read.

Probability of identical twin relationship: 99.8%.

He looked up.

“My father had a twin?”

Emily nodded.

“You didn’t know?”

Daniel shook his head.

His family history had always said Richard was three years younger.

Different birthday.

Different mother, supposedly.

A lie.

Another lie.

Emily whispered:

“Claire believed Richard and Robert had been switching identities in business records for years.”

Daniel felt the entire foundation of his family move beneath him.

Bellmere might not simply be embezzlement.

May you like

It might have been built around two brothers sharing one identity.

And Claire had discovered it shortly before she died.
