Chapter 15 - There Were Two People in Claire’s CarPolice photographs showed only one body at the crash scene.

Claire.

Driver’s seat.

Seat belt fastened.

No passenger.

But Rachel claimed Richard had been there minutes earlier.

“Prove it,” Daniel said.

Rachel looked somewhere offscreen.

“I have footage.”

“Send it.”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“The key.”

“What key?”

“Don’t play stupid.”

Sophie’s star.

Box seventeen.

Daniel frowned.

“That box is empty.”

“You opened the wrong thing.”

“The bank confirmed—”

“Robert used seventeen for two places.”

Daniel’s pulse increased.

“One bank box.”

“And one estate locker.”

Daniel thought of the island vault.

“No.”

“Not the island.”

“Where?”

Rachel smiled.

“When I have the key.”

Daniel understood.

She did not know he had it.

Good.

“What’s on the footage?”

“Richard getting into Claire’s car.”

“And getting out?”

“No.”

“Then why wasn’t he found at the crash?”

“Exactly.”

Rachel ended the call.

Police traced nothing useful.

Officer Shaw turned to Daniel.

“Locker seventeen.”

Daniel thought through the estate.

Robert loved numbered systems.

Boathouse.

Wine cellar.

Old hunting room.

Garage.

Then Sophie remembered something.

“Grandpa had little doors in the library.”

Daniel turned.

“What doors?”

“Behind the books.”

Robert’s library contained built-in cabinets.

Most had been emptied after his death.

Behind one lower shelf, Daniel found twenty small brass doors.

Numbered.

17 opened with Sophie’s key.

Inside was a flash drive.

One photograph.

And Claire’s red leather bracelet.

Daniel froze.

Rachel had worn an identical bracelet at the hospital.

Not Claire’s.

A copy.

Designed to make Sophie trust her.

The flash drive contained dashcam footage from Claire’s SUV.

Daniel could barely breathe as he opened it.

9:17 p.m.

Claire driving.

Rain beginning.

Passenger door opened.

Richard entered.

He looked terrified.

“Drive.”

Claire stared.

“What happened?”

“Rachel knows.”

“Knows what?”

“That I talked to you.”

Claire pulled away from the curb.

Richard kept looking behind them.

“She’ll kill me.”

“You’re being dramatic.”

“No.”

Daniel leaned closer.

Richard continued.

“She has the Bell files.”

Claire’s face changed.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“She told Nolan?”

“Yes.”

“Does Margaret know?”

“No.”

Claire drove.

At 9:32, headlights appeared behind them.

Black SUV.

Claire looked in mirror.

“Is that her?”

Richard turned.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s heart pounded.

Claire accelerated.

The video continued.

At 9:39, Richard shouted:

“Turn here.”

Claire turned onto a side road.

The black SUV followed.

At 9:43, Richard grabbed the wheel.

“What are you doing?!” Claire screamed.

“Stop the car!”

“No!”

“I’m getting out!”

Claire fought the wheel.

The SUV swerved.

Stopped.

Richard opened the door.

Jumped out.

Rolled onto wet grass.

Claire screamed his name.

Then drove.

Richard disappeared behind.

The black SUV stopped near him.

Claire continued alone.

Daniel’s breathing eased slightly.

Richard had not been inside during the crash.

Rachel lied by omission.

At 9:46, Claire made a phone call.

The prepaid number.

A woman answered.

Margaret.

Daniel looked sharply at his mother.

Margaret went white.

“You said Claire called you earlier.”

“She did.”

“You also spoke three minutes before the crash.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

On video, Claire shouted:

“Your brother-in-law just jumped out of my car!”

Margaret’s recorded voice replied:

“What?”

“Richard. Rachel’s chasing me.”

Margaret sounded genuinely shocked.

“Claire, slow down.”

“I’m going to police.”

“No.”

Daniel stared.

Margaret said no.

Claire shouted:

“What do you mean no?”

“If you go now, everything comes out.”

“Yes!”

“Daniel will lose the foundation.”

“I don’t care!”

“He could lose the house.”

“I DON’T CARE!”

Daniel felt tears in his eyes.

Claire had chosen truth.

Margaret had chosen preservation.

Margaret’s voice became desperate.

“Just come to the mansion.”

“No.”

“Claire!”

“I’m done letting this family bury people.”

Then headlights appeared again behind Claire.

The black SUV.

Faster.

Margaret shouted through the phone:

“Who’s behind you?”

“Rachel.”

Claire accelerated.

Daniel watched helplessly.

The SUV moved closer.

Bumped Claire’s rear bumper.

Once.

Claire screamed.

Second impact.

Her SUV swerved.

Margaret’s voice screamed from the speakers:

“CLAIRE!”

The dashcam spun.

Guardrail.

Glass.

Darkness.

Daniel stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Margaret was sobbing.

Daniel stared at her.

“You heard it happen.”

“Yes.”

“And you told police you hadn’t spoken to her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked destroyed.

“Because Rachel called me immediately afterward.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“What did she say?”

“That if I told anyone…”

Margaret looked toward Sophie.

“…Daniel would be next.”

Daniel stared.

“And you believed her?”

“I had just heard her kill your wife.”

Silence.

Daniel understood the fear.

He did not forgive the lie.

“Rachel murdered Claire.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

Officer Shaw reached for her phone.

But Daniel noticed one final file on the drive.

Audio only.

Recorded three days after Claire’s death.

Robert’s voice.

Robert had already been dead six months.

Except the voice said:

“Margaret, Rachel cannot know I’m still alive.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Margaret froze.

Daniel slowly turned.

“You buried Dad.”

Margaret said nothing.

“But Dad wasn’t dead.”

Her face collapsed.

And Daniel realized the biggest lie in the Whitmore family had been sitting in front of him from the beginning.

Robert Whitmore had faked his own death.
