Chapter 18 - ROSALIE HEARS THE TRUTHThe weeks after the revelation were difficult.

Rosalie became angry.

Not constantly.

In waves.

At Victor.

At doctors.

At Dante.

At herself.

At the horse.

At the wheelchair.

At everyone who had told her adaptation was the same as acceptance.

She snapped at Eli one afternoon.

“You don’t understand.”

He answered:

“No.”

That annoyed her more.

“Stop agreeing.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You can walk.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not angry all the time.”

Eli looked at her.

“You sure?”

Rosalie paused.

He continued.

“My dad died.”

“I know.”

“I prayed for him.”

“I know.”

“I got mad at everyone who said ‘God has a plan.’”

Rosalie looked at him.

“I hated that.”

“Why?”

“Because it made his death sound like a lesson for me.”

Rosalie stared.

Eli shrugged.

“Sometimes bad things are just bad.”

She whispered:

“Then why pray?”

“Because sometimes I don’t know what else to do.”

Rosalie looked down.

“I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“That I’ll stop getting better.”

Eli thought.

“Maybe.”

She glared.

“Terrible comforting.”

“Sorry.”

Then:

“But if you do, you’re still Rosalie.”

She looked at him.

“And if you don’t?”

He smiled.

“Then you keep working.”

Simple.

Again.

May you like

Rosalie nodded.

The next day, she asked for extra therapy.
