Chapter 9 - THE SECRET ISABELLA LEFT BEHINDRosalie’s accident had always seemed simple.

She was nine.

A beginner riding lesson.

The horse startled.

Rosalie fell.

No major spinal fracture.

No catastrophic head injury.

At first, everyone expected recovery.

Then weakness increased.

Pain.

Numbness.

Loss of coordination.

Within months, she used a wheelchair most of the time.

Doctors disagreed.

Functional neurological symptoms.

Post-traumatic complications.

Rare inflammatory possibilities.

Then Dr. Kerwin presented the final framework:

Long-term severe motor impairment.

Uncertain recovery.

Dante accepted it because he needed a name.

Victor supported that.

“Stop putting her through tests.”

“She needs stability.”

“Let her adapt.”

Dante believed him.

Now Grace’s memory bothered him.

Isabella had not wanted Rosalie riding.

Victor had arranged the lessons.

Why?

Probably nothing.

Still.

Dante called the stable.

The old instructor had moved to Connecticut.

He found her.

She remembered Rosalie.

“She was nervous.”

“Did she want to ride?”

“Not really.”

“Who insisted?”

“Mr. Salerno said she needed confidence.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Did the horse behave unusually?”

“No.”

“Did she fall hard?”

“Not as hard as the outcome suggested.”

There.

Another question.

The instructor continued:

“She stood afterward.”

Dante froze.

“What?”

“She stood.”

“For how long?”

“A minute maybe. Then sat down.”

No one had told him.

He had arrived twenty minutes later.

By then Rosalie was on a stretcher.

“Who was there?”

“Staff. Mr. Salerno.”

Dante felt cold.

Victor had known she could stand immediately after the fall.

Why did that matter?

May you like

Maybe it didn’t.

But for the first time, the official story no longer felt complete.
