Chapter 1 - The Door HandleSophia rested her head against Daniel’s shoulder.

For the first time all afternoon, she looked happy.

“When are you finally leaving your wife?”

Daniel smiled.

Not warmly.

Calculatingly.

“Soon.”

Sophia lifted her head.

“You’ve been saying that for months.”

“I know.”

“Then when?”

Daniel reached up and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Once I get this house…”

He let the words settle.

“…and the share of the assets I need…”

Sophia’s brows tightened slightly.

Daniel smiled again.

“…then we’ll finally be together.”

Relief softened her face.

Then—

CLICK.

The front door opened downstairs.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Sophia bolted upright.

“What was that?”

Daniel looked toward the bedroom door.

High heels clicked across the marble foyer below.

Sophia went pale.

“Wasn’t Claire supposed to be gone until tonight?”

“She was.”

Daniel checked the time.

4:17 p.m.

Claire’s client dinner had been scheduled for seven.

Sophia stared at him.

“Daniel.”

Footsteps reached the staircase.

“Bathroom.”

“What?”

“Go.”

Sophia scrambled off the bed.

Daniel whispered sharply:

“Now!”

She crossed the bedroom and slipped completely into the en-suite bathroom.

Daniel followed long enough to make sure the door closed.

Click.

Sophia pressed her shoulder against the wall beside it.

She stared at the handle.

Daniel rushed back toward the bed.

He straightened his shirt.

Smoothed the sheet.

Ran both hands through his hair.

Then forced his face to relax.

Claire entered.

Elegant navy dress.

Work bag.

Hair still pinned from the office.

Daniel smiled.

“You’re home early.”

“My meeting ended early.”

“That’s good.”

Claire dropped her bag onto a chair.

Daniel stepped closer, subtly blocking her view of the bathroom.

“Why don’t we go out for dinner?”

Claire smiled.

“Sure.”

Relief loosened Daniel’s shoulders.

Then Claire picked up a towel.

“Let me take a quick shower first.”

Daniel froze.

“You’re… showering now?”

Claire frowned.

“Yeah.”

A beat.

“Why?”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“Nothing.”

Claire walked toward the bathroom.

Inside, Sophia’s eyes remained locked on the handle.

Claire’s heels stopped outside.

Sophia held her breath.

The handle moved.

Daniel spoke behind Claire.

“Wait.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

“I broke a glass in there.”

She frowned.

“When?”

“Right before you came in.”

“I’ll wear slippers.”

“No.”

His answer came too fast.

Claire looked at him.

Something changed in her expression.

Very small.

Daniel corrected himself.

“I mean, let me clean it first.”

Claire studied him.

“You’re acting strange.”

“I’m trying to stop you from cutting your feet.”

“You said you broke a glass.”

“I did.”

“What kind?”

Daniel paused.

“Water glass.”

Claire looked toward the bathroom.

Then back at him.

“Okay.”

She stepped away.

Inside, Sophia’s knees nearly gave out.

Daniel grabbed cleaning supplies from the hall closet.

“Go downstairs,” he told Claire. “I’ll be two minutes.”

Claire hesitated.

Then:

“I need to answer emails anyway.”

She left.

Daniel waited until her footsteps disappeared down the stairs.

Then opened the bathroom.

Sophia stood rigid against the wall.

“Oh my God.”

“Quiet.”

“She almost opened it.”

“I know.”

“What do I do?”

Daniel checked the hallway.

“You stay here.”

“For how long?”

“Until I get her outside.”

“What if she comes back?”

“She won’t.”

Sophia grabbed his wrist.

“This is insane.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You wanted us to be together.”

“I didn’t agree to hide in your wife’s bathroom.”

“You knew I was married.”

Sophia’s face tightened.

“You told me you were practically separated.”

“We are.”

“You’re sleeping in the same bedroom.”

Daniel’s jaw hardened.

“This is not the time.”

He closed the door again.

Downstairs, Claire opened her laptop.

But she didn’t answer a single email.

She had smelled something when she entered the bedroom.

Perfume.

Sweet.

Young.

Not hers.

And Daniel had not broken any glass.

She knew because the bathroom floor had been spotless through the slight gap beneath the door.

No sparkle.

No fragments.

No sound of anything being swept.

Two minutes later, Daniel appeared.

“Done.”

Claire smiled.

“Thanks.”

He crossed toward the kitchen.

“I’ll make you a drink.”

Claire went upstairs.

This time Daniel didn’t follow.

She opened the bathroom.

Empty.

At first glance.

Claire stepped inside.

The room smelled stronger now.

Vanilla.

Something floral.

She opened the shower.

Nothing.

She checked the floor.

No broken glass.

Not one piece.

Her heartbeat changed.

Then she saw the linen cabinet.

One door was slightly open.

Claire pulled it wider.

Nothing inside except towels.

But one stack had collapsed.

Someone had been pressed against it.

Claire looked down.

On the marble floor beside the cabinet lay a tiny gold hoop earring.

Not hers.

She picked it up.

Her fingers went cold.

Then something vibrated beneath a folded hand towel.

Claire froze.

A phone.

Pink case.

Not Daniel’s.

Not hers.

The screen lit.

A message notification appeared.

DANIEL: Stay quiet. Once I get her downstairs, leave through the side door.

Claire stopped breathing.

Another message arrived.

DANIEL: Don’t panic. Thursday changes everything.

Then a third.

DANIEL: Once Claire signs, the house is basically ours.

Claire stared at the screen.

For one terrible second, the affair almost became the smaller betrayal.

Because Daniel wasn’t only hiding another woman in her bathroom.

He was planning to take Claire’s home.
