Chapter 23 - Sophia Came Back OnceSophia returned to Boston almost two years after the bathroom.

She emailed Claire first.

I’m in town for three days. I have something that belongs to you.

Claire almost ignored it.

Then curiosity won.

They met at the same Cambridge coffee shop where Sophia first warned her.

Sophia looked older.

Not dramatically.

More settled.

She was back in school.

Studying communications.

Working part-time.

No Daniel.

“How are you?”

Claire asked.

“Better.”

“Good.”

Sophia smiled nervously.

“I brought this.”

She placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside was a memory card.

“What is it?”

“An old voice memo backup.”

Claire stiffened.

“I thought everything went to lawyers.”

“So did I.”

Sophia found the card inside an old phone case.

“I listened once to make sure what it was.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

“The first time Daniel told me about the house.”

Claire almost pushed it back.

“I don’t need it.”

Sophia looked surprised.

“It could matter.”

“The case is over.”

“Oh.”

Claire slid the card back.

“You keep it or destroy it.”

Sophia stared.

“You don’t want to know?”

“I know enough.”

That was true.

Two years earlier, Claire would have listened to every second.

Now more evidence did not mean more healing.

Sophia slowly put the card away.

Then:

“I’m glad.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I was bringing you another wound.”

Claire smiled faintly.

“I have enough.”

Sophia laughed softly.

Then became serious.

“I’m in therapy.”

“Good.”

“I kept asking why I believed him.”

“What did you decide?”

“That I wanted a shortcut to adulthood.”

Claire listened.

“Daniel had a house. Money. Confidence. He knew restaurants where people recognized him.”

Sophia smiled sadly.

“I thought being wanted by him meant I had skipped being uncertain.”

“And now?”

“I’m uncertain all the time.”

Claire laughed.

“That sounds healthier.”

“Apparently.”

They sat quietly.

Then Sophia asked:

“Did you ever forgive me?”

Claire considered.

“Yes.”

Sophia looked shocked.

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire stirred her coffee.

“It stopped being important.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

“That’s not the answer I expected.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

Claire continued.

“I don’t want what happened to define you forever.”

Sophia nodded.

“And I don’t want it to define me.”

Claire looked at her.

“Then don’t let it.”

Sophia wiped one tear.

“I’m still sorry.”

“I know.”

No hug.

No need.

They walked outside together.

At the corner, Sophia turned one direction.

Claire another.

Then Sophia called:

“Claire?”

“Yes?”

“Did you renovate the bathroom?”

Claire laughed unexpectedly.

“Not yet.”

Sophia smiled.

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because that linen cabinet is terrifying.”

Claire laughed harder.

May you like

For the first time, a memory from that bathroom made her laugh.

That surprised her more than forgiveness.
