Chapter 1 - The Smile Behind His ShoulderRachel Whitmore had spent three months planning the party.

Two hundred white roses had been flown in from California. The champagne had cost more than some people’s monthly rent. A string quartet played beneath the twenty-foot crystal chandelier while nearly eighty guests filled the grand reception hall of the Whitmore mansion in Westchester County, New York.
Everything looked perfect.
Rachel should have felt perfect too.
She stood beside one of the long dining tables in an elegant burgundy gown, laughing politely at something a board member’s wife had said, when Anna appeared beside her carrying a silver tray of champagne.
Anna had worked in the mansion for barely four months.
Twenty-seven. Dark hair tied neatly behind her head. Black-and-white housekeeper uniform. Quiet enough that most guests barely noticed her.
Rachel noticed her.
Recently, Anna had begun looking at Michael differently.
Not openly.
Never enough for Rachel to accuse her of anything.
Just small things.
Holding his gaze a second too long.
Smiling when he entered a room.
Standing slightly closer than necessary.
Rachel had told herself she was imagining it.
Until Anna stopped beside her.
“Mrs. Whitmore?”
Rachel turned.
“Yes?”
Anna leaned toward her ear.
Her hand rose slightly, shielding her mouth from everyone around them.
Then she whispered four words.
“I slept with your husband.”
Rachel stopped breathing.
The orchestra continued playing.
Glasses clinked around them.
Somebody laughed near the staircase.
But Rachel heard nothing except the violent pounding of her own heart.
She slowly turned her head.
Anna was still beside her.
Their eyes met.
And then Anna smiled.
Barely.
A tiny movement at the corner of her mouth.
“He really likes me,” she whispered.
Rachel’s hand moved before her mind caught up.
SLAP.
Anna’s face snapped sideways.
A champagne flute tipped on her tray and shattered on the marble floor.
The room went silent.
Every conversation stopped.
Dozens of faces turned toward them.
Anna held her cheek.
For a fraction of a second, she looked directly at Rachel.
And smiled again.
Then Michael appeared.
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
Rachel turned.
Her husband stood several feet away in his black suit, his face twisted with genuine confusion.
Something inside Rachel exploded.
She slapped him too.
Gasps rippled through the room.
Michael stumbled backward, one hand rising to his cheek.
“How dare you sleep with her?” Rachel shouted.
His expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not panic.
Shock.
“What are you talking about?”
Rachel pointed at Anna.
“She just admitted it to me!”
Every guest looked toward the maid.
Rachel expected arrogance.
Perhaps even triumph.
Instead, Anna transformed.
The smile vanished.
Her eyes filled instantly with tears.
Her shoulders folded inward.
She backed away as if Rachel frightened her.
“No,” Anna whispered.
Rachel stared.
Anna shook her head violently.
“No. I never said that.”
Rachel felt the blood drain from her face.
“You whispered it into my ear.”
Anna looked at Michael.
Not Rachel.
Michael.
“She forced me to say it.”
Rachel blinked.
“What?”
Anna began crying harder.
“She hates me,” she said. “She’s hated me since I started working here. She keeps saying I look at Mr. Whitmore. She told me tonight that if anyone asked, I had to say we were having an affair so she could fire me without paying what she owes me.”
“That is insane!”
Rachel stepped forward.
Anna recoiled dramatically.
Michael moved between them.
“Rachel, stop.”
“She’s lying!”
“I said stop.”
Rachel stared at her husband.
“You believe her?”
“I just watched you attack an employee in front of eighty people.”
“She told me she slept with you!”
“And I’m telling you I didn’t!”
Rachel looked around desperately.
Surely someone had seen Anna lean into her ear.
Several people had.
But no one had heard the words.
Anna wiped her tears.
“I just want to leave.”
Michael turned toward her.
“Anna—”
“She’s going to hurt me again.”
Rachel laughed once in disbelief.
“You manipulative little—”
Michael turned.
His face had changed.
Anger replaced confusion.
“Enough!”
Rachel barely saw his hand move.
SLAP.
Pain exploded across her cheek.
For one second, nobody moved.
Not Rachel.
Not Michael.
Not the guests.
Even Anna seemed surprised.
Rachel slowly raised a hand to her burning face.
Her husband had never hit her before.
Not once in eleven years together.
Michael stared at his own hand as if it belonged to someone else.
“Rachel…”
She stepped backward.
He instinctively moved in front of Anna.
Protecting her.
And that was when Rachel saw it.
Over Michael’s shoulder, Anna slowly lifted her face.
Tears still shimmered on her cheeks.
Her mouth trembled as though she were terrified.
But her eyes were calm.
Completely calm.
She looked directly at Rachel.
Then the corner of her mouth lifted.
The smallest victorious smile.
Hidden perfectly behind Michael’s shoulder.
Rachel’s fear replaced her rage.
This wasn’t an affair.
It wasn’t jealousy.
It wasn’t even about Michael.
Anna had wanted Rachel to slap her.
She had wanted witnesses.
She had wanted Michael angry.
Everything had happened exactly the way Anna intended.
Rachel looked at the silent ballroom.
At the horrified guests.
At Michael standing protectively in front of the crying maid.
And she understood something far worse than infidelity.
May you like
She had just walked directly into a trap.
And judging by Anna’s smile, the trap had been waiting for her long before tonight.
