Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Worked Here Before MeRachel returned to the mansion while Michael was at the office.

She didn’t tell him.
The household staff had been given the day off except for the elderly groundskeeper, so the enormous home felt abandoned.
Rachel went directly to the basement archive.
The Whitmores never threw anything away.
Tax records.
Staff contracts.
Property renovations.
Old photographs.
Boxes stretched across shelves dating back fifty years.
She searched for Bell.
Nothing.
Then she searched employment files from twenty-eight years earlier.
Claire Bennett.
Claire Brooks.
Claire Bell.
Rachel found the folder.
CLAIRE E. BELL
HOUSEHOLD ASSISTANT
EMPLOYED: 1996–1999
Rachel’s hands trembled.
Anna was twenty-seven.
Born in 1999.
Rachel opened the folder.
Claire had worked inside this house until the year Anna was born.
Her employment ended abruptly.
Termination for misconduct.
Alleged theft.
Rachel kept reading.
A diamond necklace belonging to Michael’s mother had disappeared.
Claire was accused.
No criminal charges were filed.
Instead, Richard Whitmore had provided a separation payment and required confidentiality.
Rachel found the amount.
$100,000.
In 1999.
Far more than a normal employee settlement.
She heard footsteps upstairs.
Rachel froze.
Someone entered the house.
“Rachel?”
Michael.
She closed the folder.
Too late.
His footsteps approached the basement.
He appeared in the doorway.
“What are you doing here?”
Rachel held up Claire Bell’s file.
Michael’s face changed.
He recognized the name.
Rachel saw it.
“You know.”
Michael stepped inside.
“Know what?”
“Stop lying to me.”
“I’m not.”
“You reacted when you saw her name.”
Michael looked at the folder.
“My father mentioned her once.”
“Why?”
He didn’t answer.
Rachel’s heart began beating faster.
“Michael.”
He sat on a storage box.
“My mother hated talking about that period.”
“Because Claire stole from her?”
“That’s what I was told.”
“Was it true?”
“I don’t know.”
Rachel showed him the photograph Laura had provided.
Michael stared.
His father stood extremely close to Claire.
Too close.
His hand rested at the small of her back.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Where did you get this?”
“From another woman Anna destroyed.”
He looked up.
Rachel told him everything.
Laura Bennett.
The assault.
The fake messages.
The settlement.
The previous identities.
Michael listened in silence.
When Rachel finished, he looked physically sick.
“So you believe me now?”
“I believe there’s more going on.”
Rachel laughed.
“That isn’t the same sentence.”
“Rachel—”
“No. Say it. Say she lied.”
Michael stood.
“I think she may have manipulated both of us.”
“May have?”
“I’m trying to understand this.”
“You’ve had months to understand it.”
He flinched.
Rachel hated that part of her still cared.
She opened Claire’s file again.
A handwritten note was clipped near the back.
Meeting with R.W. — private.
Another.
Claire requesting reconsideration.
Then a final document.
A settlement agreement.
One clause immediately caught Rachel’s attention.
The payment was not solely connected to the alleged theft.
It included language releasing Richard Whitmore from “any and all personal claims arising from the relationship between the parties.”
Rachel looked at Michael.
“What relationship?”
His face had gone pale.
He read it.
Neither spoke.
Then a voice came from the basement stairs.
“I wondered how long it would take you to find that.”
Rachel turned.
Anna stood above them.
No tears.
No fear.
No trembling.
She wore jeans and a dark sweater.
Michael stepped forward.
“What are you doing here?”
Anna slowly descended.
“I came for my belongings.”
“You were told not to return.”
“I still have a key.”
Rachel watched her.
Anna looked at Claire’s folder.
For the first time, genuine emotion appeared in her face.
“My mother was twenty-three when she started working here.”
Michael said nothing.
“She loved your father.”
Rachel felt the entire story shift.
Anna looked at Michael.
“And he destroyed her.”
Michael shook his head.
“I don’t know anything about that.”
“No. Of course you don’t.”
Anna’s voice trembled, but this time Rachel suspected the emotion was real.
“Your family made sure nobody knew.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“So that’s why you came here?”
Anna looked at her.
Her eyes hardened.
“You think this is about your marriage?”
“You tried to destroy it.”
Anna gave the slightest smile.
“I didn’t have to try very hard.”
Michael moved between them.
“What do you want?”
Anna looked directly at him.
Then she said:
“I want the truth about who my father is.”
Michael froze.
Rachel looked from Anna to the date on Claire’s employment file.
The year Anna was born.
And suddenly the impossible possibility became obvious.
Anna wasn’t claiming she had slept with Michael.
May you like
She was suggesting something much darker.
That they might share the same father.
