Chapter 15 - Caroline and TabithaTabitha had recorded the conversation herself.

She intended to prove Caroline was threatening her.

Instead, the audio became evidence against both women’s worst instincts.

Caroline sounded exhausted.

“Sit down.”

Tabitha:

“I’m not staying.”

“You came here.”

“To tell you to stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Turning Thaddeus against me.”

Caroline laughed weakly.

“I wish I had that much control over your brother.”

Tabitha:

“You know what you’re doing.”

“I know you forged my signature.”

Silence.

Thaddeus stopped the audio.

Then resumed.

Tabitha:

“I used the version you approved.”

“I approved a bank trustee.”

“I approved protection for Grayson.”

“You did not approve yourself.”

“You were going to cut me out.”

“Yes.”

The directness stunned Thaddeus.

Caroline continued:

“Because you took money.”

“I was going to return it.”

“Stop saying that.”

Thaddeus almost smiled through grief.

He and Caroline had arrived at the same sentence years apart.

Then Tabitha:

“You don’t understand what happens to me if Magnolia Ridge fails.”

Caroline:

“I think that is exactly what you refuse to understand.”

“What?”

“You survive.”

Tabitha went quiet.

Caroline continued:

“The project fails.”

“You survive.”

“You lose money.”

“You survive.”

“Your father was wrong about you.”

“You survive.”

“Thaddeus is disappointed.”

“You survive.”

Then:

“But every time you are terrified of surviving disappointment, you take another person’s right to choose.”

Thaddeus closed his eyes.

Tabitha began crying on the recording.

“I gave everything to this family.”

Caroline’s voice softened.

“I know.”

“Then why do I feel like you’re taking it?”

“Because nobody ever told you that love doesn’t become equity.”

Silence.

Caroline continued:

“You do not own part of Thaddeus because you raised him.”

“You do not own this house because you kept it running.”

“You do not own Grayson because you helped when he was a baby.”

“You do not own family money because your father disappointed you.”

Tabitha whispered:

“Easy for you to say.”

“Why?”

“You got everything.”

Caroline laughed.

“I’m dying.”

The room in Maya’s office went completely still.

On the recording, Tabitha said nothing.

Caroline continued:

“I would trade every account, every room in this house, every piece of jewelry you think I stole from you for five more years with my son.”

Her voice broke.

“You are so busy counting what everyone else has that you cannot see the thing I’m actually losing.”

Tabitha started crying harder.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Thaddeus froze.

Caroline:

“For what?”

“I don’t know.”

A strange echo of Grayson in the bathroom.

Then Caroline said:

“Start with the signature.”

Long silence.

Tabitha whispered:

“I did it.”

There.

A direct confession recorded by Tabitha herself.

“I used your old signature.”

“Thaddeus’s too.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought I could fix it before anyone needed to know.”

Caroline sighed.

Then:

“Give me the original agreement.”

Tabitha:

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“The bank already relied on it.”

“Then we correct it.”

“You’ll destroy me.”

“No.”

Caroline’s voice was firm.

“You may finally face consequences.”

Tabitha:

“Same thing.”

Caroline:

“That is the problem.”

The recording ended after another four minutes.

No threat.

No secret crime.

Just two women understanding each other too late.

Thaddeus sat in silence.

Maya said:

“This is significant evidence.”

“Yes.”

Tabitha had kept it hidden because it destroyed her legal position.

Why produce it now?

Thaddeus asked.

Tabitha answered through counsel:

“Because Caroline was right.”

That did not erase three years.

But it mattered.

Then Thaddeus listened again to one sentence.

You survive.

Maybe that was Caroline’s final gift to Tabitha too.

Failure did not equal annihilation.

Consequences did not equal abandonment.

Tabitha could lose money.

Status.

Control.

Even freedom.

May you like

And survive.

The question was whether she would finally learn to live without making someone else pay for her fear.
